Maxwell
Maxwell #04-183
(Fostered in Balsam Lake, WI)

Max is here, and I can tell already that he's going to make someone a great pet! He's 1 1/2 years old, purebred (and just beautiful), a fairly big dog, and very sweet. Max was recently neutered and is up to date on his shots. He has that typical golden Velcro dog personality--wants to be by my side constantly. Max knows a few commands -- he knows "sit" and "come". I think he knows "stay", but doesn't always do it. He'll definitely need a refresher obedience course or two. He loves to play with toys. We were out playing fetch with a ball this morning, and this boy can jump! I've never seen a dog jump so high to catch a ball. He'd be a great Frisbee companion! Interestingly, he has not tried to jump my fence...which he could easily do as it's only about 3 1/2 feet tall. That tells me that he respects fences. He has dug under them in the past according to his paperwork though. Max does fine with my kids (ages 8 and 11), but I'd recommend that he not go to a home with really young kids -- I think he'd be too much for them. He gets along fine with my golden, but I'm not sure about the cats. They haven't ventured downstairs to meet Max yet, and I'm not sure I want them to. My guess is he'd chase them, but I don't know for sure.

Max does have a few issues that need to be dealt with. He doesn't have a lot of manners -- he was kept outdoors in a kennel for most of his life, and I think that he's just so excited to finally be around people that he gets a bit out of control. He jumps on people to greet them -- we're working on learning an alternate, more human-friendly greeting. Max wants human contact soooooo much, that ignoring him when he jumps and petting him when he approaches nicely seems to be working. He hasn't learned that furniture is not for climbing on....even the kitchen table! A very loud, grouchy "no" will bring him down, though. He's already doing better with that one. I haven't seen him chew on anything inappropriate -- but I'm not confident that he wouldn't. He did pick up a shoe of mine (again, another grouchy "no" did the trick). He'll probably need lots of exercise...he's still young and has a bit of puppy in him! And Max is protective of his toys -- doesn't want to let them go or share them with other dogs. He's not mean or aggressive about it....just refuses to give them up.

All in all, he's a great dog. Very sweet and loving, and will be a really fun companion for someone willing to put in the time and effort to train him and teach him good manners. If you think Max would be a good addition to your family, please let Placement know!

UPDATES:
06/23/2004:

Just a quick update on Max. He continues to do well here, and I think can be placed at any time. And look at those pictures....what a gorgeous dog!! We've been working on learning some manners, and I'm amazed at what a quick study he is. Training will be no problem for Max, as long as someone is willing to put in the time and effort. I do think he will do best in a home with no or only older (maybe 12 and up) kids as he tends to get a bit rough when he plays. We're working on being less mouthy when seeking attention. And on greeting people by sitting rather than jumping. He does seem to be learning that calm gets more petting than crazy!

I also think that he'll do best in a home where he can be the only pet. He's great with other dogs, but is very territorial with his toys or bones. He and my Maggie have had a few scuffles over bones (that I thought I had put away!), and he doesn't back down. Max also decided that it would be fun to chase my cat, and I'm not too sure what he'd do if he caught her!

We go to the vet tomorrow for a check-up, and then should be ready to go. If you're willing to spend some time training him, he'll make a wonderful pet! And I don't think it will take much....he learns super fast! Let Placement know if you're interested in this beautiful boy!

Maxwell is here in Balsam Lake. He is a character! He starts with some obedience training today, and I think once he has some instructions and a way to focus some energy he will be great! He is a big boy that doesn't have many manners, but very sweet! He can fit 3 stuffed animals in his mouth at the same time! I think he will be looking for a home in about a week!

It's time for Maxwell's update! He is doing great! He is a wonderful boy and learning proper manners very quickly. He now sits very nicely when being petted, no longer mouths hands or arms. He greets all the dogs very nicely and played well with our 6 month old puppy. Freida, our Shepherd, taught him it was not nice to growl and try to grab bones from other dogs, and we haven't had a problem since with anyone. He is a quick study!

He walks great on a leash and is very good with heeling, come, sit, down and stay. He does very much enjoy destroying anything that can be destroyed, tennis balls, squeaky toys, stuffed animals, so all his toys are the very tough kind! He now gives any toy or bone that he has in his mouth nicely, and takes treats nicely. He has also always been good about his food, does not guard it. He is just shaping up wonderfully, and someone very special better adopt this guy soon, because he is going to be a perfect puppy, and I can't keep another one!!!!!

He has a lot of energy but will also just lay about and sleep for hours too, so he is not a hyper dog. He is very well house trained, has never had an accident! He is a comedian and does things to make me laugh everyday! I gave him this hard ball that is too big to fit in his mouth!! He plays with it like a cat! But continues to try to pick it up! Then he does this bounce thing in front of you, all 4 feet straight up in the air, about 3 feet off the ground, but he doesn't jump on you!! Anyway, he just gets better every day! So hurry up and adopt this wonderful guy!

Maxwell went home today with a wonderful man named Bud! These two are going to be best buddies! Max forgot all the manners that I have been teaching him and Bud didn't care at all! It was quite wonderful, Max is going to have the full time attention that he needs and deserves! Another happy ending!!! WOW!

Max went to Dog Heaven today
He was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma
Went down hill fast, but now he is no longer hurting
My heart is ripped out, but what can you expect..........
Those Goldens have a special way of manipulating you
and giving you unconditional love
I just thank God for the good times I had with him
Too bad it had to end so soon...................................

Bud
