Rudy
Rudy #08-309
(Fostered in Climax, MN)

Sponsored by:
Jill & Keith J. from Spring Lake Park, MN

Rudy is a sleek and tall 12 year old golden boy. He was born on 5-31-96, but don’t let his age fool you. He is active, energetic and sharp as a tack. He has lived in the same home his whole life and he was much loved. You can sure tell that because he is calm and secure and very well behaved. Rudy gets along well with our resident dog Toby Ed 06 390 and the cats. He just needs a new place to hang his hat and he’ll settle right in.

Rudy really likes to play catch outside and knows a lot of commands. He stays in the yard (unfenced) for the most part but made a social visit to the neighbor’s flower garden to smell the moss roses. He leisurely walked back when I reminded him where the boundaries were.

He loves to be brushed and is gentle with everyone. He plays with our resident boy (15) and has lived with two year olds in his last home so he is used to children.

There are no behaviors we have noticed and he is an all around lovely guy who is melting our hearts.

When we got him on Saturday there was a note in his file that stated “he has a sensitive stomach, so no treats”. What they should have said (and I don’t mean to be indelicate) is…“he farts like a rock star!”. We switched his food and he seems to be better but definitely no milkbones if you want to kick back and watch a long video.

“Rudy Patootie” is scheduled for the vet on Monday and will do his check-up and I’ll ask about the gas.

I’ll update soon but I have a feeling this beautiful purebred Golden lovebug will have nothing but sweet stories until he finds his forever home.

Just taking a break after a long walk on the bike trail!

What is so rare as a day in June?

UPDATES:
06/25/2008:

Rudy had a great week at our house. He loves to stick his nose out of the window on car rides and we had many stellar adventures. He went to the school and met the drivers ed instructor, we went to the credit union to get some cash, we went to the post office to get the mail. He came inside at every stop and was polite and quite the show off every time. Someone must have taught him to bat his eyelashes and tilt his head when he hears, “Aren’t you a pretty boy?” He would “sit” and “shake” when asked.
He was a brave little soldier at the vet where he got his microchip and a heartworm test (negative). He greeted all the other dogs there with a waggy tail and a sniff, big dogs… little dogs… cats… he didn’t care; everyone is a potential friend to Mr. Rudy. The vet said to just keep him on a high quality consistent diet and his tummy will be fine and he has been MUCH better.

The most recent highlight was a birthday party for the resident 15 year old boy on Tuesday night. Six 15 year olds and Rudy was right in there on the scavenger hunt. My son warned everyone “no treats for him or you will be sorry” (remember the flatulence situation?). It appears that he is not used to treats though so he doesn’t beg at all. He has been stink free for 4 days thanks to his new diet. He lay quietly to watch “The Mist” and was happy to be part of the festivities.

Mr. Rudy likes to nap on a dog bed on the floor and doesn’t show any interest in getting up on the sofa or bed to sleep. Toby Ed watches from the chair and says “hey, buddy we can get on the furniture here” but Rudy just lounges on the big round dog bed happy to watch the world go by while waiting for his forever home to find him.

He honestly is the youngest senior dog I’ve ever seen – the only part of him that looks old are his teeth – they are worn down a bit as if he was a rock chewer but I haven’t seen him chewing anything hard. He likes a fuzzy turkey toy. He has a slightly white face but for the most part is a beautiful light red. He has a distinctive beauty mark on his face (mole) that gives him a mature John Boy Walton look. You couldn’t ask for a nicer dog friend, so take a closer look at Rudy if you are in the market for a loyal companion that will give you his heart. I guarantee that he will steal yours.

Just one last thing and this could be important to note: We visited some friends outside of town and he didn’t chase the chickens. Very amazing quality for a non farm dog. OK, I kept him on his leash, but still he didn’t get a crazy look in his eye and want to eat them. He just watched thoughtfully and then sniffed the ones that walked by him. (I’ll bring the camera next time).

Take a look at Rudy – city dog – farm dog – he’ll be a good boy where ever he ends up (as long as there are no crazy processed artificial dog treats and there are plenty of belly rubs).

07/11/2008:

Rudy sailed through the 4th of July holidays with no bad experiences and he even watched a parade! He is such a dear boy. We had his teeth checked over as a few looked broken off and I was worried that they were hurting him but the vet said that they were stained and didn’t look like they were that bad. We have figured out that he knows lots of tricks and is especially good at “speak”. He has such a distinguished look about him and is so happy for any and all attention. He went down the hill by our house and rolled in something very smelly – so I popped him right into the tub and suds him up. He closed his eyes and sighed like he LOVED it. He was enjoying his beauty parlor routine. We are also happy to report he has no more gas problems! It must have been his food at first. So he is a sweetheart through and through. I hope that if you are looking for a senior companion you will consider this tender hearted well behaved guy. He has a wonderful disposition that is playful and loving. He is perfectly housetrained and goes out to do his business then gives one little “bark” to come in. He has a favorite dog bed downstairs but likes to sleep on the landing where the stairs turn – he can watch both occupied bedrooms from there and does a walkthrough every night to make sure everyone is tucked in then goes back to the landing. When we get up he greets us with big wags and kisses – the typical greeting is “good morning sunshine” and he lights up like a Christmas tree. I usually let both the dogs out at 7:00 (Toby Ed resident) and sit on the porch swing while they romp and play and I read the paper. Rudy is the lead in playing and gets Toby moving even though Toby is two years younger. Rudy is so funny because he always wants to sneak a stuffed toy outside to take to the pine trees. His outside toys are the balls and Frisbee. I go to work around 8:00 and the dogs and cats hang out in Zac’s room until they nudge the lazy teenager out of bed around noon. Life is good.

I’m afraid that we have totally fallen in love with another foster dog (you would too so let us know if you want to meet him). He loves car rides and is willing to travel.

07/31/2008:

Rudy continues to be a joy to have in the house. We did think that he had a hot spot under his ear that wouldn’t go away and ended up bringing him to the vet for a look-see. They shaved the spot and stated that it was a bad flea infestation that looked like it had been there for a while. Poor guy. He really wasn’t itching or looking uncomfortable but is happy as a clam. A course of antibiotics and he is good as new.

Rudy likes children of all ages and let a couple toddlers crawl all over him without blinking an eye. He even let them take a ball right out of his mouth. He also likes cats and will give them a sweet nuzzle if he feels like it. He leaves the cat food alone but will gobble up any other dog food that is set out. We had the neighborhood poodles come over to give him the nippy poodle test and he passed with flying colors. He gave them a sideways glance then grabbed a stuffed toy and went to the closest dogbed.

We had a HUGE thunderstorm this past weekend and he decided that right in the middle of it he had to go out to go potty. He insisted on going out (by pacing back and forth in front of the door) and then came right back with a frisbee in his mouth soaking wet. He loved his towel drying and then plopped right down for a nap with the frisbee.

We have a summertime teenager who stays up late and sleeps in, Rudy is right with him and has developed the same routine. We’re hoping that the school year won’t be too much of a shock! He is a precious dog who would fit in to any home that is looking for an active senior companion. He will travel for a visit so let placement know if you’d like to meet this loving golden boy and we’ll pack up his toys and hit the road.

Can we go inside to the central air?
It’s 85 degrees in the shade!

Rudy enjoying a hot summer day in Northern Minnesota.

Running like the wind hoping his forever family finds him soon

08/15/2008:

Rudy has a new sponsor!  YAY! Jill & Keith from Spring Lake Park, MN are Rudy’s sponsors. He is so excited he can hardly stand it.

Rudy is going to have an excellent weekend doing his usual dog activities knowing someone out there loves him. He might go to the Steam Thresher’s Engine Show at Itasca if it’s not too hot. He’ll pose for a special photo for his sponsors and include them in his doggie prayers.

Please email Placement@ragom.org if you are interested in falling in love with Rudy too.

09/05/2008:

Rudy Tuesday. Rudy didn’t want me to throw his Pedigree around or anything, but just let me say, if perhaps you were throwing a high tea and Rudy was lying on a rug in the parlor, names could be dropped. Greenfield’s Bingo Dauber and Rainbow of Roses are dogs he remembers fondly (dad and mom). No wonder he is such a well mannered boy. While looking through his papers the vet pointed out that he comes from quite the history of hunting dogs.

All we know is that he is a darling and lovely guy. As the days are cooling off he is likes to spend lots of time on the porch just watching the world go by. He enjoys going to the big city (Grand Forks) shopping because he knows that he gets to pick out a toy at PetCo when we’re done shopping. There is nothing to report about Rudy that is concerning in the least, he just gets more adorable as each day passes. He wishes that his forever home would find him soon so he can spend the last Golden years of his life on his very own porch somewhere. We sing to him “Goodbye Rudy Tuesday, Who could hang a name on you? When you change with every new day-Still Im gonna miss you... “ We’ll definitely miss Mr. Rudy when he goes to his forever home but he really yearns for his own home, hopefully before Minnesota winter winds start to blow. If you’re looking for a tall and slim Golden Senior, Rudy could be your main man.

09/12/2008:

“I kissed a squirrel and I liked it” (Not to be confused with Katie Perry’s summer hit song.) Rudy lies so quiet under the tree in the yard that squirrels almost kiss him. I know the cats do. Everyone loves Rudy.

Rudy is going to go in for a check next week on his stiff joints – the weather seems to be making him a little hesitant about getting up and down, just a little slow, but he still has a smile on his face no matter what. He walks around three blocks every day and always wants to get the leash on – he never pulls or runs ahead. When we get back home he goes straight to his dog bed for a nice long nap, he is for sure dreaming of kissing squirrels in the yard of his forever home somewhere in his future.

I kissed a squirrel and I liked it.

10/16/2008:

Rudy here. Boy, I have to say that life is very special here. And if someone doesn’t come 'n' git me, I just might have to stay here. No complaints here though. I’ve settled in quite nicely and I love my foster family. F-A-M-I-L-Y--I love that word. Maybe someday we can skip the Foster part of that and just say My FAMILY. I’ve been dropping the hint that I want to live here forever. That would be GReat. But until that happens, I’m taking advantage of our walks and being the 2nd top dog around here. And we all know that number 2 tries harder.

Have I told you yet about my favorite thing to do? Every chance I get I fly through the tall grass and get stickies on me. They kind of hurt, but it feels oh so good when my FD & FM remove them. Yup, I’ve got them wrapped right around my paw.

Hey, did you hear the joke about the ceramic chickens? Me neither. Don’t know what’s so special about them. Aren’t they supposed to be yellow?

In all the previous write ups, I don’t remember mentioning Scooter. He is the family cat. FAMILY, what a wonderful word, (another hint) or senior moment? You be the judge. Anyway, Scooter is my buddy. We snuggle together sometimes. Yup, I admit it, I’m a cat dog. Maybe I should get a cat costume for Halloween. I could be Scooter and Zac could be my brother. Yes. A brother for Halloween. That would be dandy. (hint, hint) Sure beats waiting until Christmas.

Well, FM is peeking over my shoulder and says to stop hinting. I best go find my toys and maybe go for a walk down the hill. Could use the exercise and the sunshine and then a nap with Scooter. Life is good here.

If I strike your fancy, let placement@ragom.org know. I got some good years in me yet.

Thanks for listening…………..Rudy

12/03/2008:

As I read the posts from Ragom folks about what they have to be thankful for this year, I think of many of the same things. Health, family, friends, and of course Goldens; we are truly blessed with them all. As our family sits back and reflects on our blessings in 2008 there will always be certain dogs that have touched us in one way or another. Rudy is one of those dogs. He is a quiet dignified senior with a hint of whimsy in his step. He reminds us everyday that we are lucky to be fostering him. He is a funny boy now that the weather is cold, he stays outside for fewer minutes and then gives his one little bark to come back in. Then it’s straight to the corn stove to warm his old bones, he’ll lie on the rug and stare into the fire with a contented look on his face and then fall asleep for a nap. He takes excellent naps and I join him as often as I can.

He is a joy to have in our house but a true blessing for him - would be a real home to call his own.

12/12/2008:

Rudy could hardly sleep last night and it wasn’t visions of sugarplums dancing in his head – it was a family that might want to meet him and take him with them FOREVER AND EVER. He can’t wait for the meeting and he was practicing his first impression paw shakes. He has been wishing for a new home for Christmas and it seems that Santa might be granting Rudy’s wish and come 2009 he may no longer be “the foster dog of Climax Minnesota.” A home of his own is just what he deserves – and he wants all of his fellow Goldens to keep their paws crossed that it will be a love match.

In the meantime Rudy is going to participate in the seasons activities, he has a new Santa scarf and will be trekking over to school to participate in caroling. His favorite cold weather activity is to lie in front of the fire and relax. I’m sure if we offered him hot cocoa he would adore it but I guess he’ll stick to his ice cream bucket of dog water. (He said to write that he never drinks out of the toilet). There’s a blizzard coming to northern Minnesota this weekend and we fully expect to hunker down and play some reindeer games with Rudy and resident dog, Toby Ed 06-390.

Waiting in the cold for Santa’s sleigh to bring him to his forever family.

Did I hear reindeer?

12/29/2008:

Rudy had a relaxing Christmas and enjoyed the festivities. He especially enjoyed his new chew bone and stuffed mallard. What he is really looking forward to though, is New Years eve, because then it will be very close to the day that he goes to meet his potential family. Rudy has been such a dear boy waiting and waiting for his forever family to find him way up here in Northern Minnesota. The northern lights were shining on the snow last night and Rudy was gazing up at them dreaming his Golden dreams (then he peed on a snowman and came inside).

We started calling him Snowbaby because he loves to go outside, roll in the snow and comes back to the door with his head completely covered in white. He makes us laugh every time. Our college girl is home for break and although she doesn't adore Goldens as much as the rest of us (because they get hair on everything she owns) she has taken quite the shine to old Rudy and he follows her everywhere. She uses him as a footstool when she's on the computer and he thinks its just swell.

The champagne and noisemakers are ready for Wednesday night but the real celebration will be when Rudy 08-309 gets to drop the numbers from his name and finds a family to call his own. 2009 will be a good year for this special fuzzbutt.

03/14/2009:

He followed the yellow brick road but … due to circumstances beyond Rudy’s control, he is back in Climax for foster care. He has settled in nicely and it is as if he never left. He is a sweet boy that causes us no problems whatsoever. He loves the snow and would lie in a northern Minnesota snow bank for hours if we let him. The recent blizzard caused him great joy – he watched out the window and then stood by the door many times wanting to romp and play with resident boy. He has nothing planned for the days ahead except his relaxing dream routine (dreaming of a forever home). He has been groomed and looks fantastic. He is UTD on all his shots and meds (the rymadil for arthritis). When he’s not napping or playing with his toys he is busy being a charming golden guy nuzzling the cats with great affection. We love Rudy Patootie and he’s a brave guy for putting himself out there again. Enough of the dating circuit – he’s ready for a true commitment. Contact the great and powerful OZ if you’d like to meet this wonderful guy or it might be easier to just get ahold of placement@ragom.org

03/16/2009:

Just had to send in this photo of Rudy playing with a toy just like a puppy!

03/18/2009:

Rudy Rutabaga is meeting a potential family this weekend who are excited about his all over doggy wonderfulness. Rudy is not nervous at all, but is thinking he is ready to give it a whirl to love them with all his golden heart. He’s ready for the feel of little arms around his neck every day and big arms around him too.

Rudy is excited that they have another dog, because he really likes the camaraderie of other fuzzbutts. He can’t wait to smell them and look into their eyes, he hopes they are good at belly rubs. He promises not to fart if he can possibly help it.

Oh, the dreams of a dog are endless in the spring! OK, it’s not spring yet in northern Minnesota, but he fast forwarded the season in his forever family dream sequence. (We’re hoping that there is no bad weather this weekend).

03/15/2010:

Old man, take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you. I need someone to love me the whole day through. (Neil Young singing to Rudy 08-309)

Rudy is an old man... but he is a gentle soul full of love. He is coming up on 14 and he has a little bit of a hard time getting up and about despite the Rymadil (for arthritis). Once he is up on his long legs, he does fine, most evenings he even walks up the stairs when we go up to bed. He likes a soft dog bed in every room and a regular schedule. Like many other seniors he can have a little problem with his daily regularity so we try to keep his diet and routine the same.

Rudy has tried out a couple families but it didn't work out reportedly because of his unpredictable pooping accidents. He should not go to a forever family with forever carpet. He is not aggressive at all but young children might be too rough for him. He does fine with our resident teenager and loves nothing more than sleeping until noon on the weekends right beside Zac.

Rudy is a friend of our resident golden and resident cat. He is a voracious eater and an even more voracious, ahem, farter. He has a seriously sensitive digestive system that earned him the nickname, Rudy Patootie.

Rudy would love to find a quiet forever home that had a very flexible schedule to let him out when he feels the urge to go. He walks right up to you and gives a little head nod toward the door to go out - we have learned to take those cues seriously.

He is a loyal companion and a good friend. If you would like to consider Rudy, let the Ragom team know you'd like to meet this lovely senior. He is waiting for someone to love him his whole life through.

04/05/2010:

Some dogs enter your life and leave it better than it was before.

Rudy was that dog for us. He was a long tall Minnesota Golden boy who grew old and became weary, he told us he was ready to go. He crossed the rainbow bridge on an early spring day surrounded by his foster family who loved him very much.

Run fast, jump high, swim long Rudyboy - you are now truly home. We will see you again one day. It was so good to know you. We will always and forever love you.
