Welcome Toby! This handsome senior is an ex-puppy mill dog.  He was a stud dog for almost nine years.

Looking at him today, it's hard to think about his past where he lived outside in an unheated shed, sleeping on concrete. Toby was rescued from that life about 2 years ago. Ragom placed Toby into a loving home where he learned to love, learned that there is a good life to be had. He lived in a home where he was showered with love and compassion. He learned to trust. Toby's owner loved him unconditionally. She is surrendering Toby back to Ragom because she feels that even though he has made tremendous progress that he would be better off in a home with a fenced yard and someone who would be home most of the day with him. She brought Toby to our home today because she wanted to see where he would be fostered.

I can totally understand those feelings.  Toby is a gem!  He made himself right at home.  Our 3 Goldens treat him as one of the family already.  Toby has minor separation anxiety and will rip paper when left alone.  I'm hoping that having 3 companions to keep him company will remedy that problem while he is here.

Toby is 10 1/2 years old, UTD and microchipped. He has no bite history or aggression. He is healthy and weighs 75#. He does have minor storm anxiety and will pace and drool.  Toby is not kennel trained or baby gate trained. He loves to ride in the car. I can see how affectionate he is as he keeps nudging my hand as I am trying to key this update! I will let you know more as we get acquainted with our new house guest. If you are interested in meeting Toby, please contact your placement advisor.

UPDATES:

12/14/2008:

Our senior houseguest is by far the easiest foster we have had. He has no demands, just wants attention.

He is such a magnet. Wherever you go , he will follow. If you are in one room and leave to go into another, don't back up or you will run into "your shadow." We think Toby is making up for the all love and attention he missed out on in his earlier years. When you look at that gray face, and think about his past, you just want to shower him with love. You can't erase all those years in the puppy mill, but you can make the rest of his life one of comfort and love...the life he so much deserves.

Toby had his vet checkup this week and we found out that he has a bacterial stomach infection. Ten days of meds and special chow will clear that problem up. It is so hard to resist giving him treats but all he gets is his special diet for 10 days.

Yesterday was pamper day! A day Toby thoroughly enjoyed. The groomer told us that he just loved his bath and even went into the crate when he was done with no problem. I guess he is crate trained. Our senior foster came home smelling so good! The 3 residents were all over him. Probably wondering why he got to go and they didn't!

Toby sleeps all night on his little bed. He does not like to be alone though. He wants to have someone nearby. The toy boxes are starting to interest him. He does check them out and will help himself to that special toy. The residents do respect him and do not try to take anything away from him.

Our oldest resident, Mandy, looks so much like Toby that you have to look twice to see which white face is coming for pets. They are so cute together! I will get some more pictures with the next update. Toby goes outside with the residents and comes back to the door like he's been here forever. Like I said, he's a gem!

12/20/2008:

Toby will be at the Maple Grove PetCo event today from 11-2!

12/21/2008:
We would like to thank everyone who stopped by to meet Toby yesterday at the RAGOM PetCo Event in Maple Grove. Toby met so many nice people and he thoroughly enjoyed all the pets he was getting.  Our resident 2 year old , Penny, joined Toby on his venture. Needless to say, we had 2 exhausted Goldens on the way home. They both slept. Not a sound out of either of them.

Toby is such a joy! That gray face just steals your heart! He has finished the pills for his bacterial infection and has that all cleared up. Toby is  a little stiff legged but we've started him on some supplements to get those joints a little more flexible. He will be picking up the pace in no time! Our resident senior, Mandy, saw great improvement when she started taking similar supplements. Talk about a world of difference for those seniors.

With our cold temps and snow, the Goldens show little interest in outside activities. So today we thought they could spend the afternoon watching football, getting all kinds of pets, playing with toys . . ..

We wish you a happy holiday. Enjoy your family, including your Goldens!

01/01/2009:
Happy New Year from Toby and the gang! Christmas brought lots of new toys for everyone! It was so much fun to watch the Goldens enjoy their new gifts. If one would get up and leave his toy, another would be there to retrieve it.  The soft fat hedgehog was the favorite!  Santa was a close second!

Our snowfall and cold temps made staying indoors and snuggling even more fun.  Every once in a while the gang would go crazy. . that squirrel just had to be chased away from the feeder.  After that task was accomplished,  everyone was content.

Toby is one of the gang.  He seems to take great comfort having companions. He is so totally calm and relaxed.  He still hasn't barked for us.  In fact, you don't even hear a peep out of him.  When he paces, you know he needs to go outside.  After his business is taken care of, he's right back at the door to be let inside.  You have to love those seniors!

01/11/2009:

It's me- Toby. FM said I could take a turn with my update. First of all, I feel very special because I have a sponsor! THANK YOU Sandra L. You made my day! It means so much to know that someone is kind and generous enough to help with my medical bills. You are the BEST!!

I am doing just fine at my foster home. It's real nice having companionship. I have 1 fur brother and 2 fur sisters. When FM and FD run errands, I don't get stressed at all because I have company. My fur sister Penny is only 2 yrs old and she is a wild woman! All she wants to do is play, play, play. I don't have the energy to play much, so she mostly picks on Wilson. He's half my age and can handle her better. I will be 11 years old in April so I am no youngster. I don't move real fast but I get to where I want to go.

When FD lets us outdoors, I let the other 3 go ahead of me. If I didn't Penny for sure would probably run over me! My eyesight isn't as good as it used to be, but hey, I'm a senior. FM always has lights on in the stairway so I can see real good when I climb the stairs. It's good exercise and I go real slow.

It's pretty cold outside so I don't stay outdoors very long. One day, though, when it was nice we made all kinds of tracks in the snow. And I even made some snow angels! It was lots of fun! Penny zoomed me a couple of times and tried to knock me over. But I stood still and she left me alone.

I like to gets lots of attention. FD even lets me sit in his lap. I stare at him for a long time and then he gets the hint that I want up. We take turns sitting in his lap. Oh, yea, another thing that I want to share... Penny makes a noise like a Beagle whenever she hears the Progressive Insurance ad on television. I know that FM always grabs the remote and hits the mute button when it comes on. But sometimes when she doesn't do it in time, Penny just bays and bays!! Then, Wilson, chimes in. When the ad is done, they both look like they feel pretty foolish. And they should!! I don't get it! FD just laughs!

Again, I want to thank you, Sandra L. Maybe I can meet you one day. I plan on going to some of the RAGOM events to find my Forever Family. I know they would just love me. I'm pretty sweet!

If you are that family and want to meet me, just contact placement@Ragom.org. Bye for now!

02/01/2009:

Saturday was a fun-filled day for Toby and our residents. The weather was just great! The blanket of snow in our back yard is now full of Golden Retriever tracks. It's been so long since we had such a nice day so we took advantage of it. Needless to say, we all slept good last night after all the exercise.

Toby is back on his medication. His stomach problems started up again so the vet put him on metroidazole again and this time also prescribed a dose of prednisone to help clear up the infection. Hopefully, this will take care of the problem. Toby stands there every morning while I give him the daily meds. He takes them like a champ! Thanks to Sandra L. for sponsoring Toby. Your generosity is covering the cost of his medications. THANK YOU!!!

We had an email this week from a RAGOM volunteer in Iowa letting us know that her resident Golden is Toby's daughter. We even received a picture! Megan is gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing. We can't wait to hear more from you. We don't know a lot about Toby's history and wonder what happened to him to give him the burn scars on his back. We also see his worn teeth and wonder if they are worn from continual gnawing.

I think my residents are telling me it's time to go out and play. I guess we better enjoy the sunshine while we can.

More later.

02/12/2009:

It may be the result of the meds, the special food, the feeling of security or even the  connection with a family member.
But whatever the reason, Toby has made tremendous changes for the better.  His energy level and balance have vastly improved.  The once limping, slow moving senior is no more!! He has picked up the pace and the unsteady hobble is gone.  Those eyes are  now looking at you full of mischief. It is so much fun to see him so playful.  Let's back up to the mischief  part. . .He has found out that cans of dog food can be opened quite easily.
So FM had to find a new storage spot after coming home to find Toby nice and content after helping himself to a "little"Purina snack. So much for dinner!
Toby doesn't miss a  thing, especially if there is food involved.  Whenever one of us is in the kitchen working with food, Toby is right in there too. . laying on his rug. . hoping to catch a nibble of whatever smells so good.
With the nice weather we have been having, Toby enjoys wandering through the yard.  Usually he and Penny are the last ones to come inside.  Toby is real inquisitive.  He has to check out everything.  Penny will sit and wait for him to return .  It's so cute!
We plan on getting some pictures this weekend and will share them with you.  More to come.

02/23/2009:

Toby here. Since Fm is so busy these days, I thought I would take it upon myself to fill you in on my progress.

First of all, I want to thank Sandra L for her support. Sandra, my meds are doing wonders for me. I haven't felt this good in ages! Thank you!!!

I am still an easy foster. I've heard Fm say that. But I have also heard her say that I am getting too curious. So, I want to give my version of the story. I'm in my second childhood. Of course, I'm curious. That's how I learn. For instance, I noticed Penny's feeding station is a 2 piece stand that holds 2 metal bowls. As I look at it, I wonder why it has 2 parts. Detective Toby on the move! But wait... FD is in the next room. I have to be patient until he leaves the house. He should be on his way soon, I hope. I think I hear him --yup, he's headed out the door. Here he comes... What?! He's only refilling his cup of coffee. There he goes... back to his recliner. What a bummer!! I guess I'll just continue laying under the dining room table studying my prey. I'm sure it won't be long... OK...Ok... It's been 30 minutes. When is he leaving??!! He's up... he's grabbing his coat... he's out the door! FINALLY!!

Plan in Progress... Toby on the move... I think if I just nudge the handle on the side, that should pop the cover. Here goes... I'm lifting the handle so carefully with my nose. It's slowly moving. I didn't realize this would take such an effort. I think it's lifting. YES...It's moving. The top is raising... the metal bowls are rolling across the floor... making LOTS of noise. My foster brother is leaving the room!! If I were him, I would too. WOW!! I found a big supply of TREATS! I'm in heaven! I think I will help myself! Oh, no. What is that I hear? It's FD... He's back!! I think I'm in trouble. I know... I'll leave the scene. I'll mingle with the 3 resident Goldens. FD will never know who the culprit is... I'm home free on this one. But FD knew... Imagine that. I had that innocent look on my face. How could he know? So... the treats were moved to a new hiding place. I know because a couple of days later. I checked it out again. The container was empty... darn! I wonder where they are now??

I guess I have a new project... stay tuned.

03/09/2009:

It's been awhile since my last update.  That's right. . Toby sent in the last one! He is a curious old guy.  I guess we weren't as dogproof as we thought we were.  We got that corrected though.  Toby continues to charm us. I was trying to take some pictures of him today.  It's not an easy thing to do when he won't leave your side.. not even for a minute! I don't think he has spent any alone time since he came here.  He is always with one of the residents or with FM and FD. We cherish our time with him and just want him to be happy and comfortable. It will be so much fun to play in the yard with him when all this snow disappears.

It won't be long now.  We can't wait!  I'm getting a nudge .. from Toby . .he knows it's mealtime!  More later.

03/25/2009:

Toby and the three residents had a little party this past week.  It was an anniversary party for Penny who came to us two years ago from the Bismarck puppy mill rescue. Toby joined in on the treats and toys which is customary at our home whenever we celebrate a birthday or an anniversary.  I think he really, really likes our parties!! I know he loved his treats! He wasn't about to leave a crumb for anyone else to get!

Toby is, by far, the most curious of the four Goldens.  He is quiet...but he is CURIOUS. We really watch that we don't leave anything around that he will get in to.  We FINALLY heard him make a sound! It was sooooooo cute!  I had mentioned in one of my earlier updates about how Penny will bay when she hears certain commercials on television. Wilson would chime in if she kept on long enough.  Well, guess what! She kept on baying... Wilson chimed in... and, very, very faintly we heard Toby join in.  He actually made a sound!! It was so cute... We just had to laugh! It only happened ONCE... so far.

Toby is still on the medication for his stomach and doesn't have any problems anymore.  Again, a big THANK YOU to Sandra L. for sponsoring Toby.  Sandra, I hope you can meet Toby someday.  We have you to thank for his progress and it would be nice if we could thank you personally.  Toby will be at a RAGOM event in Elk River in April. He wants to show everyone what a handsome senior he is.   More details to come with the next update.

04/15/2009:

Toby will be at the RAGOM event at Chuck & Don's in Elk River on Saturday, April 18 from 11-2 (or longer). Come and meet this handsome senior! Saturday is Toby's 11th birthday! What a fun birthday this will be - a chance to meet and greet and get all kinds of hugs!

04/18/2009:

Toby here. . I had to let everyone know how I spent my birthday. First of all, FM and FD took me and Penny to Chuck & Don's store in Elk River for a Ragom event.  We got to meet all kinds of  people. It was so much fun, but I have to admit, I did get tired.  The store people were so nice to us- - they set up a table and chairs and even some bowls of water.  They made us feel so special. People even gave us treats. I gobbled mine up but Penny was shy about taking any.  I think she knew we'd get treats when we got home at my party.  FM and FD told me how good I behaved...Penny too.  Tonight we each got a new toy and I got to pick FIRST!

Thanks to everyone who made this such a special day . .the people at Chuck & Don's who invited us, the new friends I made that stopped by and also the Ragom crew that I came to know and really, really like.

05/02/2009:

Toby is so enjoying this gorgeous weather.  He is so much fun to watch as he patrols the yard.  But Penny is not going to let him venture out alone.  So she takes the tour with him.  There they go checking everything out.  Soon Wilson and Mandy are joining them. FD is busy picking up sticks and brush in the yard and bringing it to a newly created brush pile.  It's kind of like a cartoon.. .FD takes the sticks to the pile and the Goldens retrieve the sticks back onto the yard.  No wonder it is taking FD so long with his project!

Penny loves to tease Toby.  Her spunk activates him.  Soon she comes running to the house and he is happily bouncing behind her.  It's such a touching picture.  Her youth brings out the puppy in our precious senior.  Mandy and Wilson treat him so tenderly. They are more his cuddle mates.  He is so content around the pack, especially in the evenings.  He starts rolling over onto his back and kicking those legs in the air.

It's a picture I treasure over and over again.

Thanks again to Sandra L. for sponsoring this sweet senior. Toby is forever grateful.

Toby needs a forever home with another fur companion.  He would make a good buddy for someone who is retired and is at home to spend quality time with him. We also recommend a fenced yard.  Toby has a mind of his own and loves to wander.  If you are interested in meeting Toby please contact your placement advisor.

05/25/2009:

What a gorgeous Memorial Day!  Toby totally enjoyed the day! He was my "helper" as I worked in the garden. The 3 residents and Toby found a nice shady spot and patiently watched as I worked. FD was doing his yard chores and when it came time for his break, the 3 residents followed him into the house. But not Toby. He is ever so faithful. He wasn't about to leave me. When my work was done, we both headed to the house together. But not until he got all kinds of attention for being my loyal buddy. And LOYAL he is.

I spent a couple of days out of town but FD stayed home with "the kids", as we call them. I enjoyed myself but am always happy to get home to the big welcome. You'd think I'd left them for weeks!! Toby was right in there to get his share of the attention. Try to pet 4 Goldens at once!! There are times when 2 hands aren't nearly enough!

Toby is a happy guy. He is just content to be with us. He is enjoying the life he should have had years ago instead of the his life in a puppy mill.  We are so grateful that Ragom freed him from his previous life. Every day he showers us with his love and appreciation.

As I type up this update, Toby is sound asleep at my feet.  My LOYAL buddy is all worn out from his day.

My buddy had a good day!

06/22/2009:

Toby is keeping us entertained every day.  His latest feat is opening the screen door and letting the crew into the house.  That's what FD found out one day. He and the Goldens were outside together.  While FD worked on the lawn, the Goldens were letting themselves into the house.  FD found them in the house sound asleep. There was Toby, sleeping on the couch ... snoring.  The other 3 were sacked out on the floor.  I guess they had enough fresh air.

Toby is the inquisitive one of the foursome.  That nose is either sniffing something out or else nudging your hand for more attention.  He's good at waking you up when he needs to go outside.  A little nudge will be followed by a big nudge if he doesn't get a response.  I guess he knows what he wants!!

Thanks, again to Sandra L. for all her support. Toby is doing quite well and will be going to the vet for his yearly checkup in July.  I'm sure the staff will adore our white faced senior.

If you are interested in meeting Toby, please contact your placement advisor.

07/04/2009:

Toby would like to wish everyone a Happy July 4th! Enjoy your holiday and be safe!

07/26/2009:

Toby continues to thrive in foster care. He has shed lots of his coat and now you can plainly see the scars that cover his entire back- - - -scars from the fire he was in while at the puppy mill. How painful that must have been for him. Anyone looking at Toby's back would agree that it is not a pretty sight. But once that coat grows back, the scars will once again be hidden from sight.

Toby enjoys life. He seems to be making up for the things he missed out on for his first nine years. He isn't real active but he gets around. He still doesn't make many sounds. Once in a while you'll hear a deep "woof" when you are walking up to the front door after being gone for a while. Toby climbs the stairs in our split level home very slowly.. one step at a time. You can hear him making the climb and pretty soon you can see the top of his head as he gets to the top. I think the stairs have been a big factor in building muscle and strength in those legs.

Toby knows what he wants when he wants it! During the night he will let you know when he wants you to get up and let him outside. That nose will gently nudge your hand. If he gets no response, that nudge gets more persistent. The other night FM was sleeping on the couch and Toby started his nudging episode. FM opened the door for him to go outside and do his business. NO . .not what he wanted! FM should have known better. She had already let him out earlier. Then Toby let FM know what he wanted. . he climbed onto the couch. Naughty FM had been sleeping in the spot that he wanted!

Toby is very affectionate. He adores our residents. He is always trying to kiss them. He enjoy the teasing he gets from Penny, the youngest resident. He gets bouncy in a senior sort of way. Then he's on his back, kicking those legs in the air, and just having fun. He's having the kind of fun we want for all our rescued Goldens. . . a chance to enjoy life and see and understand the good things life has to offer. Toby has stolen our hearts and reaffirms our commitment to Ragom and what our organization stands for.  . .rescuing and finding homes for Goldens so that they can live the life they so deserve.

08/13/2009:

Toby will be at Chuck & Don's in Elk River on Saturday from 12:00-2:00 PM.  Stop by and meet this handsome senior!

08/15/2009:

It's me Toby, checking in to let you know what a FUN day this has been. I got to go to Chuck & Don's in Elk River for a Ragom event. Everybody was soooooo nice! I got so many pets and even some treats! Cooper A got to join us. I really liked him, even though he got way more attention than me. He's a  young handsome dude. You should have seen him butter up to FD. He even went as far as to climb into FD's lap! I think he was a favorite the way everyone was lining up to meet him!

Thanks to everyone at Chuck & Don's for making us feel so welcome. FM told me that she shops there a lot and that's where all my cool toys come from. I especially like the ones with squeakers. Well actually, they have squeakers when I get them , but I just love to see how fast I can get those buggers out! FD watches me closely each time I get a new toy, but once his guard is down, I go to work!!

I'm pretty tired tonight. Going out on the town is hard on us seniors. So I think I will hit the couch early.

I need to get my beauty sleep so I can be ready for whatever tomorrow brings! I heard FM say she was going back over to Chuck & Don's to shop! So guys. .   if you are reading this . ..Sell her some more SQUEAKER TOYS!!

09/07/2009:

Toby has been thoroughly  enjoying his summer. He is really feeling good these days. We so enjoy watching him as he competes with the 3 residents for his share of the attention from FD and FM. They all get their share, but sometimes  they all want their share at the same time!

Toby has not changed our schedule one bit from the first day he arrived. That shows you how easy going those seniors are.

The other day FD was outside doing some chores. When he finished, the foursome went charging to meet him. Toby was actually running. FD couldn't believe his eyes. That senior was on the move! Only thing was.  . .his brakes didn't work. Toby ran right into FD. I don't know who was more surprised. I think they both were sure the other one was going to stop! The good news was that there were no casualties!

FM doesn't know why she bothers to set her alarm these days. Every morning Toby makes sure that FM is up early enough to feed the crew and yet have enough time to get ready for work. . with time to spare. Good boy!!

Toby is looking pretty spiffy these days. His scarred back is becoming hidden with his new hair growth. His winter coat is covering those reminders of long ago. He need never look back. He is safe.

10/07/2009:

Toby here-- FM told me I could fill you in on what I have been up to lately. Actually I have been so busy!

I try to get FM up nice and early each morning. Then I join "the crew" and go back to bed for some more R&R. I know FM is happy that I keep her on schedule. Sometimes she's kind of crabby, but once she has her morning coffee, she mellows out.

I just don't know how this family ever got along without me!!

My daily routine is pretty hectic. I keep busy getting lots of pets from FD, I help patrol the yard for squirrels and robins, and I hang out with Wilson, Mandy and Penny to keep them company.

Today it finally was nice. I thought the rain would never stop! FD spent lots of time with us out in the yard.

I'm pretty tired tonight. I just hope I wake up to get FM off to work in the morning!

Now a special thank you to my "special angel" Sandra L. I hope you are reading my updates and know how much I truly thank you for your kindness. I promise not to wait so long next time I update. I know you probably worry about me so I want you to know that life is just GREAT!  Becoming a RAGOM Golden was the best thing that ever happened to me. Until next time. . .

10/10/2009:

Seniors Toby and Mandy enjoying the October snow are soon joined by Wilson and Penny.

10/21/2009:

It's time to update and let everyone know how our precious senior, Toby , is doing. We spend our days enjoying the Goldens and all their antics. Toby is sooooooooooo HAPPY!  He has such a bounce in his step. He totally enjoys the interaction with the 3 residents. He knows that he belongs. I think that is the key.....belonging. Penny, the 3 yr old resident, loves to tease Toby. When he is her target, she is all over him . .and he LOVES it. He reacts with total alertness and you can just see how much fun he is having.

Toby is so smart. He has watched Penny turn her body sideways in front of FD's recliner day after day. He has watched FD scoop Penny up into his lap and smother her with hugs and pets. Well, Toby got wise. He wanted a piece of the action. After Penny departed FD's lap, Toby picked himself up from his bed and headed for the spot in front of FD. To our amazement, Toby positioned his body sideways just as Penny has done daily. FD asked Toby if he wanted to get up. So FD scooped Toby up into his lap. You can only imagine how tickled Toby was. He was on cloud nine! FD started hugging and massaging Toby and you could just see the body relax and go limp. With eyes closed, Toby just SOAKED in the attention. It was just priceless to sit and enjoy the sight in front of you. It was such a day brightener!

Toby isn't an active Golden, but he is smart. He's a senior enjoying each day and loving each minute of life. He shows us his love each and every day, and we continue to love him back. That's what it is all about.

Toby is getting the love and  attention he deserves. He is also getting the proper medication and nourishment that has brought him to this point. A special "Thank You"  goes out to Sandra L., Toby's sponsor. Sandra, we hope you realize the impact you have made in Toby's progress. You  have been a major part in what Toby is today .. HEALTHY AND HAPPY.

11/07/2009:

What a gorgeous weekend here in Minnesota! Toby is stretched out on his rug basking in the warm sun. We're making sure he gets to enjoy these nice sunny days. Those chilly wintry days will be here in no time.

Toby and the residents spent a good part of the morning just checking the boundaries. I'm sure they detected the scent of the deer that probably crossed the yard during the night in search of apples and corn.

Penny, as usual, is the one initiating playtime. Toby, of course, takes in the attention with pleasure. He's so good to her and she is careful not to play too roughly with him. It's amazing that they know these things. Toby's coat just shines in the sunlight. His winter coat has grown so that it is soft and thick, not  thin and coarse like it was last year when he came to us. Also, he is now able to sit on his behind. Last year he was just skin and bones in the rump area. In fact his tail was almost as wide as his rump area. It's just amazing the results you get with the proper care and nutrition.

Toby is looking in at me, so I think that it's my signal to give him some more attention. Thanks for reading our update. More to come.

11/22/2009:
It's me Toby. Today I'm making Fm happy by letting her dress me up as a Pilgrim. How humiliating! Oh well, let her snap the picture and then I get a treat!

I'm doing just great. Last week I got to go to the vet and catch up on my shots. She said I'm looking pretty good for an old timer. I could have told her that! Today we get to play outside and I heard FD say that tonight is bath night.

It's kind of fun when I get my bath. FD picks me up and puts me in the tub and FM stands in there with me and massages me while she suds me up. Those massages are just great! I could stand in there all day and get pampered but there are 3 others that need their turn too. We sleep so good after our baths. Sometimes I even sleep in and FM loves it when that happens because I am her alarm clock and I tend to get her up too early!

Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for reading about me. I'll keep in touch.

Toby

Amos 08-109                          Merry Christmas to the Golden seniors

Lori, Kerry, and the Mutts                     Bree 07-151

12/08/2009:

I feel so special. Thank you Amos for the Christmas token. And another thank you to my anonymous Christmas token donor. You both make me feel so special! I guess that means we are friends- special friends.

Today I had company. The big black dog that lives behind us came over and FM let her into the yard. She is one BIG neighbor. She always runs up the stairs and lays on our deck. Then FM has to call her down and we all play together. Well, actually I stay out of the way, otherwise I would get run down. I know my neighbor is friendly but she is a roughneck! So Wilson usually is her playmate. When it is time for the neighbor to go home, FM has quite a time getting her to leave. It's so funny to watch. We have 4 gates to our fenced-in yard and when FM goes to open one gate, our "visitor" runs to another. It usually takes a lot of effort but eventually she goes home.

I'm so excited for Christmas. Today FM came home from shopping and I just know some of those presents are for me. When I get the chance I'll just have to investigate! I mean, I get them anyway. So why wait??

Thanks again to my "special friends". And Happy Holidays to my sponsor, Sandra L. I hope you all have the best Christmas ever. Let's stay in touch!

Your friend,
Toby

12/13/2009:

Hi everyone Toby here. Isn't this great I get to do my own update, but I really don't know what to say because my FM is not here to tell me what to type, so I guess I will share this photo with you that I found by the computer. I don't know if I am suppose to send it or not to my web page but here it is.

If you liked my Thanksgiving photo you are really going to love this one.

ENJOY!!

Do I look cute or what?

12/20/2009:

Toby  isn't fond of our Minnesota winters. Our first cold day was a complete surprise to him. For some reason that morning, he ventured further away from the house than he usually does. Of course, his feet got cold as we hadn't put his boots on. FD had to walk to the far end of the yard and pick up the cold senior and carry him to the house. We learnd that boots are a GOOD THING!
Toby looks so cute in those little red boots as he slowly checks out the yard. While he is checking things out, the 3 residents are usually rolling in the snow. On the mornings when we have a new blanket of snow on the ground,  our yard is full of Golden  snow angels!

As we near the Christmas holiday, we wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to the following who sent Christmas wishes to Toby:

Amos 08-109
The anonymous well wisher to numerous Golden Seniors
Lori, Kerry and the Mutts
Bree 07-151:-)

We are touched by your thoughtfulness. You made our day and Toby's day!  We send wishes to you and hope you have an extra special holiday.

Toby also sends Christmas wishes to Sandra L, his sponsor. Thanks for your  continued support and commitment to Ragom.

To all  our Ragom friends and to everyone reading our site.  . . . . .Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

01/05/2010:

Brrrrrrrrrrrr!! It's so cold here in Minnesota! Toby is spending much of his time  laying by the heat register and LOOKING outside. It's a lot warmer inside!!

Toby is busy these days trying to get those  annoying squeakers out of his Christmas toys. He is so quick.  Thought to keep in mind: Buy toys WITHOUT squeakers!  What were we thinking?? FD must have done the shopping! I'm almost sure of it!

Toby  continues to be a magnet, especially to FM. When you talk to Toby in a high cheerful voice, he actually has a bounce in his step. He kind of throws his head toward you with mouth wide open. It's soooo cute. It's one of those sights you have to see to truly appreciate. When he walks toward  FM with that open mouth, he looks like a baby bird waiting for its Mom to feed him. The sight just warms your heart! He follows up by bumping his head against your hand looking for those pets that he always gets. He continually shows his affection not only to FM and FD, but to the 3 residents. No one is left out! Our family is a Golden family. I'm not sure who rules . . .I think it may be the Goldens!

01/23/2010:

It's me, Toby,  with another update. I was a couch potato today. I mean who wants to go outside and play in the rain anyway?

Penny went out alot. She always gets excited when anything moves.  I mean anything!!  Today she got excited when the neighbor walked to his mailbox, when a squirrel was at the feeder, when a snowmobile went by. I got tired just watching her go in and out. None of that stuff bothers me.

I don't move around as fast anymore. FM and FD don't let me go up and down the stairs as much as I used to. They put this thing up that blocks the stairway when they want me to stay downstairs. But I never have to stay by myself. If I have to obey the rules so do the 3 residents. But we don't mind because it's pretty cozy with all our toys and and we even have our own tv. Usually we get to watch the western station. I think that's because there are no commercials. Remember I told you before how Penny starts howling when certain commercials come on. She's kind of crazy!

Tomorrow FD said the whole family gets to watch football. I don't care who wins, but I sure enjoy cuddling up to FD and getting all kinds of pets. I'm usually snoring and soaking in all the attention. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Life is sooooooooo good!

02/12/2010:

Happy Valentine's Day! Well, here I am again wearing another goofy hat. FM thinks it's so cute. I just let her plop the hat on my head and wait for her to take the snapshot.  If it makes her happy, I'm happy. Every time a holiday rolls around, I just know what's coming- -another hat, another picture.

There are just too many holidays!

I was listening to the TV and that groundhog better be right. He said there was 6 more weeks of winter, or something like that. All that snow has slowed me down,  FM has been making paths for me. So I follow the paths when I go outside. It's so much easier to get around. Penny just plows through all the snow. But then she is a wild pup when it comes to playing outside. I'm not as young as I used to be.

That brings me to another holiday coming in April...my birthday. I will be 12 years old and I'm sure FM will have some getup to put on me. I just hope it isn't anything too embarrassing. Watch my updates--

I'm sure my birthday picture will be out there.

All for now. Toby signing off.

03/10/2010:

Toby continues to work his way into our hearts. He has changed so much since he came to our home over a year ago. He went from being a passive follower to a "I know what I want and I know how to get it" confident senior.

Toby wants to be where the action is. We try to plan his day so that he is not climbing the stairs more than once or twice a day. He doesn't appreciate the baby gate that keeps him from climbing the stairs. He tries to slide it open but after a useless struggle usually joins the resident Goldens for cuddle or play time.

The couch is still his favorite place to sleep at night. Sometimes one of the other Goldens will share it with him, but usually he is sprawled out the entire length of it all by himself.

He is eating well and his coat shows it. When FM gets home from work, Toby is the greeter at the door. He makes coming home from work a special treat! He lets you know that he missed you and now he wants your full attention!!

Thanks for following our updates. More later ....

04/11/2010:

What a beautiful weeekend! Toby and the troops are enjoying all the sunshine . It seems like ages since we were able to sit outdoors and enjoy the sounds of nature. FM was busy reading the morning paper as she lounged in her favorite lawnchair. And surrounding her was the trio. . Toby, Wilson & Penny. Our foursome is now a threesome. Our resident senior, Mandy, crossed the Rainbow Bridge last month. We miss her, but it was her time to leave us.

Toby is more at home than ever. He seems to have formed a stronger bond with Wilson and Penny. While Mandy kept everyone in line if they got carried way, the threesome doesn't have the alpha dog to contend with. At this point, there doesn't seem to be an alpha.

Toby had  visitors yesterday. Regina and her Mom from Iowa stopped by to meet Toby. Regina's Golden, Megan, is Toby's daughter.

The similarity is so apparaent between Toby and Megan. He even got treats and a framed  picture of Megan. Thanks Regina and Clara.

And thanks for the delicious dessert!  We enjoyed your company!

Toby will be 12 years old on the 18th of this month. So today, we took his pre-birthday hat pictures. He was so good about it!

Just the perfect senior gentleman! When Fm gets the camera out, Penny tried to disappear. It's usually Penny that gets the camera spotlight! Today she got a break!

We send wishes to Sandra L, Toby's sponsor. Thanks for your continued support.

Thanks  everyone for following our updates. More to come later.

Another Birthday Hat?

05/02/2010:

Toby continues to be a magnet! Even today as I planted my garden, there he lay, content as could be watching me from the sidelines as I worked.  He was joined by the residents, Wilson and Penny.  The threesome was content just to enjoy the sunshine and  each other's company. As soon as I was done and heading for the house, my pals were right behind me.

You can't find better companionship than that!!!

Toby will sleep good tonight! Actually, he sleeps good every night.  We have gotten used to his soft snoring. We just chuckle when we listen to him. It's so Toby!!!  And, he OWNS the couch. He lets us all know that. He's earned the spot and nobody even questions that!

It's mealtime...Toby is up and about and nudging FM. Who even needs a clock?? Those seniors sure know what they want and when they want it!

Thanks for following our update. More later...

06/03/2010:

Toby is doing just great. He has been enjoying the air conditioning on these hot muggy days.  Of course, if the residents and FM or FD are outdoors he is more than happy to join them.  He knows that he gets one trip a day to the upper level of our split level home. So when we all head for the gate, he picks up the pace and almost trots to get there.  We all enjoy our evenings in the family room upstairs. It’s either “pet me, pet me” as he nudges your hand or listening to the snoring as he is sacked out on his little bed.  He is just a picture of contentment as he lays all curled up on his bed. Toby is living the Golden Life! Thanks again to his sponsor, Sandra L. for her generosity in helping Toby get to where he is today.

06/27/2010:

It's time for my next update. FM let me write this one so that I can fill you in on some of the fun stuff happening around here.

Penny, Wilson and I have been voting to see who's the boss.  Everytime we vote it comes out to a 3 way tie!!  Wilson thinks he should be in charge because he's been here the longest. I came here last, but I am the oldest and I say"Oldest Rules". And Penny, well Penny is spoiled and thinks she should have her way no matter what. I can't even imagine letting her rule!!

I'm pretty content and am feeling good.  I'm not real active, but I get to where I want to go. It just takes me longer. My ventures usually take me to the couch, to the water bowl or just outside to do my business. I get waited on so I don't have to travel to get my food dish.  Do I have FM trained or what?!  Oh, I almost forgot. I do walk to the garden and usually find a nice shady spot to nap before I walk back to the house. I just love my naps!

07/31/2010:

It's time to update you on our precious senior.  Toby is doing quite well. He just enjoys being around his fur brother and sister. The threesome stay so close to each other. It's a daily ritual for the 3 of them to follow the fence line in search of predators. It's just so cute to watch -- single file -- follow the leader- they actually walk the perimeter.

Who knows what could have invaded their playground. They are going to make sure there have been no unwelcome guests in their yard. It's a Kodak moment, but I failed to get the snapshot! (I'll work on that!)

Toby loves his spot by the air conditioning vent. He makes sure he settles in before one of the others gets there! He doesn't realize that they don't want that spot anyway!  Another nightly ritual of Toby's is his staredown when FD is lounging on Toby's couch. Naughty FD should know that Toby ALWAYS sleeps there!

Toby and Wilson just love my garden string beans. We buy ours at the farmer's market and let them graze in the garden. Veggies are good for them, right? Another Kodak moment missed on film!

Toby sends greetings to his sponsor Sandra L. Thanks for following our updates.

08/31/2010:

It's time for another Toby update! I've been pretty focused on staying indoors away from all that sweltering summer sunshine! I only ventured ouside to take care of business and then I was back at the door waiting to be let inside. That heat really bothers me. The weatherman promises that it will cool down. He better be right or I'm switching stations!

I just had my monthly bath. Boy did that feel good! FM always works real fast when she is shampooing and rinsing me. I can't stand for a real long time and if she doesn't hurry, I always lay down. Most of the time I get my turn first. Do you think that's because I'm the favorite??  I'm sure of it! I always go and roll in the grass after they're done. You should see me kick my legs in the air. FM always laughs when I do that!  Boy will I sleep good tonight. Those baths always do me in. I hope I don't snore too loudly.

Thanks for following my updates. I will write more later. Right now I need to grab my spot on the couch while it's still vacant.

A big "Hi" to my sponsor, Sandra.

10/02/2010:

Time for another update from your friend, Toby. I am pretty busy these days. Talk about a hectic schedule. First I have to make sure to wake FM so that she feeds us at 4:00 every morning. (I'm an early morning riser.) Once she lets me out to potty and then serves me breakfast, I am pretty content. So it's time to go back to sleep for 3 or 4 hours. I sleep really, really good on a full stomach.

In the meantime FM has left for work, so then it's my duty to make sure I wake FD around 8:00. He really depends on me to wake him. Sometimes, not often, he's up before I am. I either stare at him or nudge him with my nose and he gets the message that I need to potty again!  My foster brother and sister, Wilson and Penny, always start wrestling once they're up the second time. Not me, I just cuddle up on my comfy bed and snooze some more.

When the dew is off the grass, we get to spend  time in the yard while FD does his chores. While he works, we guard the place. Sometimes a jogger or biker goes by. Sometimes it's a crazy squirrel trying to raid the suet. Doesn't matter what's moving, it gets our attention. Penny and Wilson are on the move! And me..I just watch the action. We have a fenced in yard so we never get into any trouble. FD takes breaks and sits with us. Then we get treats. Sometimes we all go inside and take a little nap. You can never have too many naps!!

Late in the afternoon, FM gets home. I make it a point to bark as soon as I hear her come in the front door. She always runs to give me a hug. I think she's thanking me for waking her so early each morning. That hug is so worth it. That's why I always make sure I wake her!

I love the evenings. FM spends time cuddling with us. I think she really misses us when she's at work. I don't stay up too late though.

Morning comes too fast. Then I start my schedule all over again. No wonder I get so tired!

11/04/2010:

Goldens sure know how to entertain themselves! Today Toby, along with his 2 Golden pals, were on bird feeder patrol. I think they thought they should keep everything off the feeders---even the birds. One of our huge oaks was damaged during the strong wind storm last week. So the threesome made sure they checked out all those limbs on the ground. That area became their playground. It was so much fun to watch them as they romped, rolled and just chased each other. Well, maybe Toby didn't chase, but he did follow.

Toby made his annual trip to his vet last week. I think they all thought he was a charmer. Everything checked out just fine. He's in good shape for a senior his age. He isn't active, but he's lovable!  I understand that he fell asleep before his exam was finished. Must have been pretty tired!! He sure got the onceover when he got home though! Penny and Wilson were right there to check him out!

Tonight as I type this update, I'm also being nudged by my precious senior. He's wanting some one on one time. Naughty FM should have cuddled to him FIRST and then do her update. I'll get my camera busy for the next update. Stay tuned...

11/23/2010:

Happy Thanksgiving from your friend, Toby! I don't know about you, but I could sure do without this freezing rain. It gets kind of slippery when you're trying to do your business. I am not as sure footed as I used to be. And this morning I saw FM digging out my winter boots. I don't know why I have to wear boots and Penny and Wilson don't.

Today we are going to watch the Vikings and Packers football game. FM and FD don't like to watch the game together. I don't know why for sure, But it could be they don't agree on who should win. It doesn't matter to me. All I know is that while the game is on, I get to cuddle with FM and get all kinds of attention. Life is GOOD!!

And don't laugh at the picture I'm attaching. Another holiday, another theme. I get to dress up and get my snapshot taken. You won't catch me smiling when this happens. I just sit there, look cute and get it over with.

Enjoy the holiday. Enjoy the game. Enjoy the picture.

You friend Toby, (the Chief)

12/04/2010:

It is with great sadness that we inform you that we decided to help Toby cross the Rainbow Bridge. His body gave out in his fight to battle kidney disease.

Toby came to our home 2 years ago and from the moment we met him we knew he was special. That gray face and those big eyes were enough to melt your heart. Toby was never an active senior, but he made sure he wasn't left out. Whether we were working in the garden or relaxing in the house, Toby was always where we were. He was one of the family. He was home.

Fostering a senior is a rewarding experience. You know you have a best friend. That friend is always there for you. You don't have to do anything exciting, just keep him company. But the time moves by too quickly and saying Good Bye to your friend is heart breaking. You know that you are doing what is best for your friend, but it still isn't easy.

Thanks to all of you who contacted us with words of comfort. Your support means the world to us. Thanks Ragom for rescuing Toby and giving us the chance to foster him. The sadness will pass, but the memories will be there to cherish forever.

Good bye Sweet Toby. We love you.

Foster Mom and Dad
Wilson and Penny
