Welcome Betsy to RAGOM!
Betsy came into RAGOM from an auction a few weeks ago. She is a purebred Golden Retriever who is 4.5 years old, tall, and athletic!
What I have found out about Betsy is that she loves her people. She pretty much follows me wherever I go and does seem to have some separation anxiety. She had been kenneling fine for the first few days, but after about a week, she wouldn't go into the kennel but to be fed, so she has graduated to free roam.
She isn't destructive and doesn't seem to bark, but I can tell she is nervous until I return. Actually, she rarely barks. I think I have heard her bark once or twice.
Betsy and my resident dog, Bella, get along well. I have a fenced yard which is great for them both to be out in, but we also walk every day.
Betsy was not used to a leash or walking around a city neighborhood. She has adjusted well using the Gentle Walker harness and staying fairly close to home so she has a sense of knowing where she is. She and Bella walk well together, but Betsy would love to catch one of the squirrels we often see. She has a bit of a prey drive, but it's getting better.
Betsy loves people, especially after she has gotten to know them. She certainly has the Golden nudge and seeks out to be petted all the time. She is a true lover.
She takes treats nicely and has developed a fondness for chips and ice cream. She is potty trained except for an accident the first day she came here. I have found getting her outside frequently is the key. Sometimes she's busy checking things out and forgets to potty.
The ideal home for Betsy would be with a family who is home more than gone. She'll do fine being left some, but I don't think she would do well for entire work days, 5 days a week.
She does require another medium to large, confident dog in the home. There are too many new unknowns for her to navigate on her own. She needs to be shown the way.
Betsy does need to be spayed, and I am waiting to get an appointment set up for that to be done.
Betsy is just a love and will reward you with all the love you can imagine.
