Butterscotch is a 7 year old spayed female who came into our house a few days ago. The car ride to our house was easy since she loves car rides and is very mellow in a car. She has been a joy to have in our home so far and has gotten along with the resident dog and cats without a problem. There is some resource guarding with bones and toys between her and the resident dog but she just gives a little growl and tells him to back away, no problems if we try and take it away. She listens well and knows some basic commands such as sit, lay, shake, high 5, and will even speak a little if you ask her (of course she only does this for treats though). She isn’t ball crazy, but loves her squeaker toys and stuffed animals. She could gnaw on them for hours and not get sick of it, strangely enough she has yet to get the stuffing from one, just managed to kill a few squeakers. Butterscotch will bring a toy back after you throw it and does like to give a little playful growl when you take it from her but as soon as you say “drop it” she lets go.
Butterscotch was surrendered due to occasionally going to the bathroom in the house and the owner having to work more hours. We have been keeping a close eye on her and have yet to have an accident. Sometimes she goes to the door but it’s hard to tell if it’s because she needs to go to the bathroom or wants to chase a squirrel. And other times you’ll let her out and she’ll just go lay outside and enjoy the fresh air, she probably likes her away time from the resident dog as he is young and a little hyper still. He has tried to get Butterscotch to play but she really isn’t interested. She would rather play with her toys, be around her people getting pet, or lay down and rest. Butterscotch also likes to hop on the couch and look at what’s going on out the front window. She has been in the kennel some and while she doesn’t like it she is fine in one. We’ve also tested her with run of the house while we are gone from work without incident, nothing chewed up and no accidents.
The vet gave her a clean bill of health but said she could stand to shed a few pounds, this shouldn’t be too hard since she doesn’t seam to eat a lot and loves her walks. But you will want to put a Gentle Leader on otherwise you will get quite an arm workout! She is getting used to daily walks in the morning and loves it. In her forever home she would be better with an older established dog or a home where she would be the only dog since she is more mellow and does not seem that interested in playing with other dogs. Also, a fence would be a plus but not necessary. She came from a home with younger kids and so far seems fine when she sees them on our walks. With the playful growling with toys, she might scare kids under 5 and she has started to jump up on us when we get home. But with how gentle she is I’m sure with training she would be fine with kids. She really is as good as she sounds, are you the person to give her the loving she deserves in her forever home?
