4/3/06: Meet Duke! He's a 1-2 year old Golden mix that was picked up as a stray in southern Minnesota. He weighed in at 58 pounds this morning at the vet but could stand to gain around 5 more. He gets along with both our resident Golden and Toy Poodle. His only reaction to our cats has been a big sniff and back to playing with our dogs. We do not know how he is around kids, but we will try to feel that out this weekend. Given his loving personality, we are not anticipating any problems.
Duke loves people. When around other dogs he wants to play non-stop, but when he is just with you he is very mellow and looks for love. He is now up to date on shots and will be getting neutered this Friday. He also has a mild eye infection and skin infection that are being treated. He came to us in need of a bath and some major grooming; he has already had a bath and brushing him out has filled our back yard with lots of hair for the neighborhood birds to use in their nests. He will also be headed to the "spa" after his neuter to get him all spiffed up.
He slept quietly last night in his crate, until our resident Golden woke him up. We have had a couple accidents, but hopefully those are due to all the excitement of being in a new place.
Duke will need a family who is committed to obedience training to help him become the best dog he can be. He does not know any commands and it appears he has never lived inside before. He has scabs on his neck from a shock collar and is timid with new experiences. He does not know what treats and toys are. If Duke is the only dog in his household, he will need a lot of opportunity to socialize with other dogs (obedience classes would be great for this!) so that they can help him learn all of the perks of the good life with a loving family!
Duke is too busy to sit still and pose for photos -- we will try and get some more of him this weekend!
