Profile

Meet Latimer, HE'S NOT YOUR TYPICAL SENIOR...he's actually a RETIRED SERVICE (SEEING EYE) DOG!

Latimer is an older, mature fellow of 11 (DOB is 10-15-98). After completing service dog training at the age of 2, Latimer spent the last 9 years living in an apartment with a partially blind woman. He was surrendered because his owner was having a hard time finding people to take him out so he could relieve himself three times a day.

Latimer has been to the vet and all is well except his liver numbers are higher than expected so we are doing additional testing to see if he has any medical issues that are cause for concern. He does have a few lumps and bumps; typical fatty cysts for a dog his age.

Latimer's been with our family for 2 weeks now and made himself right at home. He does have minor storm/firework anxiety- his 2nd night here we had a thunderstorm and I woke up to find him hiding in a corner in the bathroom. His SO said she had a blanket in her closet for him to go to during storms. Other "fun facts" about Latimer:

  • He's spry for his age, still loves a good tennis ball chase. When he gets the ball, he loves to remove the fuzz.
  • Completely housetrained (only 1 accident on day 1 but we had to learn his sign). He's able to hold it for up to 12 hours (doesn't HAVE to do that here but he did with previous owner).
  • Loves his walks and handled a 2 mile walk- no problem! He walks so well on his leash that my 2 year old niece was able to walk him to the park (without any assistance!) He is however, a walker, and not a runner (she tried to run with him but it was a little difficult for him to keep up).
  • Truly a velcro dog that enjoys his human companions. Very sweet and loves to be petted.
  • Gets along well with my 2 resident dogs plus he's kid tested and kitty cat approved!
  • Only barks when someone is at the door so he could be in a townhouse or apartment where neighbors are close (plus he is used to apartment living and rides well in the elevator :)

All in all, he is a GREAT dog and EASY to have around (definitely my easiest foster to date).

Loves to go for a ride in the car- rides well and jumps in and out on his own.

Pretty content to lay anywhere.
He's on the deck but has his head on the patio door frame so he can monitor what we are doing inside!
