Meet Prince (AKA Chance).  This big headed love muffin is an 11 year old Golden Retriever/Lab mix.  We call him "Chance" because he is getting a second chance at having a golden life!  Chance was seized from a home and brought to a shelter in Hibbing by animal control, so not a lot is known about the environment this sweet guy was living in.

We have been getting to know Chance for the last several days.  He is pure joy!  Here is what we have learned about Chance so far:

  1. He LOVES attention and affection.  Even eye contact with this sweetie will get his tail thumping.
  2. He was pretty frightened of stairs.  I don't think he was familiar with using them.  However, after a few days he seems to be conquering his fear with no problems.
  3. He totally ignores cats
  4. He did a great job meeting my 9-year old niece.  I think he would love kids that pay attention to him.
  5. Gets along well with our resident dog.
  6. Chance has a limp.  After a visit to the vet, we learned that he has severe right elbow dysplasia.  He has been on a medication for a couple of days, and it has made a huge difference.  He is much more playful!  Chance will need to be on daily medication for this.  We have also started him on Glucomsamine and fish oil supplements.  The vet says Chance will always have right front limp, however, a daily med and a couple of supplements will help keep his joints comfortable!
  7. Chance is also lyme positive, which will be easily treatable with the 30 day presciprion of antibiotics he has started.
  8. Chance is a velcro dog.  He likes to be where you are.  He seems starved for human attention, and so appreciative for every snuggle and kiss he gets (and he is getting lots!)
  9. Because of Chance's elbow dysplasia, he does seem to have short bursts of activity, then he likes to lay down and chill for a bit.  He is so easy to please!
  10. Chance could stand to lose 5-8 pounds, which of course will help his joints, so we have started to work on that.  This guy LOVES food.  :)
  11. Chance did not react to fireworks that were going off in the neighborhood over the weekend, which is a good sign!
  12. Chance does not know any commands, so we are working on "come", "sit", "lay down", etc.
  13. He pulls on a leash and would benefit from a gentle leader.
  14. He was really dirty and filled with tics, but after a trip to the groomer with his foster brother, he looks gorgeous!  Chance did a great job letting his foster dad and mom pull tics off of him.  He lets you do anything to him and still wags his tail.
  15. You will LOVE his enormous head.  It is so incredibly cute and squeezable!
  16. He appears to be potty trained.  No accidents in the house and we are on day 4.
  17. We did leave him home alone for a couple of hours with his foster brother with no incident.  I do think Chance would do just fine being left at home.  He seems to have no problem being mellow.
  18. He sleeps soundly through the night without a peep.

Chance (and his foster parents) would like to thank Rick, Jo, and Bruce for helping to transport him from Hibbing to the metro!

If you think Chance would make the perfect addition to your family, let your placement advisor know.  This guy is a true gem and he has a lot of love to give.
