Profile

Roscoe (#10-244) became a RAGOM forever dog on his first birthday (8-28-10). He did not seem too impressed when we told him his birthday present from his new foster family was making him an Iowa Hawkeye. Roscoe handled his transport from White Bear Lake, Minnesota to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday with no problems. In fact, he was surprisingly calm for a one-year old with new people, dogs, cars, all day long. Aside from a few minor first-time meeting manner corrections from our three dogs and four cats, he settled in very quickly (including settling into the kiddy pool!). He was on free roam in the house for the night and did just fine, curious about a refrigerator magnet or two, but nothing serious. At his age, he will need plenty of chewtoys to vent his urge to chew on the right objects. He was also introduced to a Gentle Leader for the first time and was able to get over his initial resistance after the first three blocks. Roscoe will have it totally mastered in one week, as he is a dog who wishes to please and loves the special attention.

Roscoe came from a family which saw him successfully through surgery and rehab for Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, a deformity of the ball in the hip joint.

See- http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/legg_calve.htm). Roscoe still has a slight hitch in his giddy-up, but appears to have recovered nicely. To avoid aggravating his hip surgery, he should be lifted into, and out of, vehicles which stand higher than a standard car.  Handles the many stairs in our house and on our deck without any difficulty. He goes to the vet tomorrow (Monday) for a general physical and also to be checked for flaky skin and odors that the surrendering owner was concerned about. He is up-to-date on all shots, neutered, but will also be microchipped tomorrow.

We will give you a full report following his vet appointment. He will probably be one of the taller goldens they have seen for awhile! As the saying goes, "he is tall, dark, and handsome". Some family will be getting a wonderful dog.
