Shylo came into RAGOM as a thin, dirty, and shy unclaimed stray from a shelter in western Iowa. She is a tiny girl - only weighing in at 40 pounds, though she needs to gain about 7 pounds to reach her ideal weight. The vet estimated Shylo to be around 2 years old, due to the amount of tartar on her teeth. She is simply adorable and she has quickly stolen our hearts. Shylo absolutely loves to go for car rides and to lay upside down on fluffy dog beds. She is quickly learning how great it is to be a RAGOM dog!
Shylo will be completely up to date on vaccines this week, is negative for heartworms, is micro chipped, and will be spayed as soon as she is done with her heat cycle. She has been given heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative as well. Shylo has been very good for her grooming sessions. I was able to clean her ears, trim nails, trim her feet, bathe and brush her without issue. She even lets me brush her teeth every night! Her coat is so soft; she feels like a fluffy puppy!
Shylo has exhibited mouthing and resource guarding behaviors since she has been in foster care. We are continuing to work with her on a daily basis, as well as work on basic obedience training and manners. She is not housebroken, but we are working on this too. Shylo is crated during the day while I am at work, and does really well. Her crate is her safe place, and she will go in there on her own to take a nap or to take a break from the household activities. She does get very excited and jumps when she is around new people. Sometimes when meeting people or when frightened she will submissively pee. We are really working on low-key introductions and trying to show her that everyday things are not scary and will not hurt her.
She has been around a 6 month old female Bernese Mt. Dog puppy and a 5 year old female Border Collie and has done really well. She is very playful and respectful to what the other dogs were trying to tell her. We haven’t let her be around any other dogs yet since she is in heat. Shylo has also done really well with our 2 cats. She will go out of her way to stay away from them, except for the few times I’ve caught one of the cats curled up with her on the dog bed. At this time we are unsure if she should go to a home with young children or not. She will need a family who is dedicated to continuing her training and who is willing to help her build her confidence in new situations.
We will keep updating on how Shylo is doing with her training and with more information as we get to know her better.
