Delancy
Profile
4/27/06: Delancy, a Golden mix, came to RAGOM from a shelter in Sturgis, SD. He was found abandoned in a house in February '06. When I discovered him and with RAGOM's approval, he was busted out of doggy jail on day 71 of his stay. No dog should languish in a shelter that long, although the woman who cares for the animals at this particular shelter loved Del very much and did her absolute best for him. Thank you Michelle, for allowing Del to come to RAGOM.
Our best guess is that Del is mixed with a Husky and is about 7 years old. He weighs 63 lbs., is neutered and is now current on all vaccinations, microchipped as well as fecal and heartworm negative. It is apparent that Del has suffered injury or infection to his ears - as both Pinna (the ear flap) are scarred, shriveled and rigid. After seeing Dr. J and having his ears shaved - cleaned and medicated, we understand that he likely has lived a life of neglect and chronic ear infections - which led to constant head shaking, resulting in a condition called Aural Hematoma. Untreated, this condition will resolve, but not without a lot of pain to the animal as well as permanent damage and scarring to the ear canal and Pinna. It is often referred to as "cauliflower ear", when not treated properly. Because of the scarring and rigid ear canal, he continues to suffer from both bacterial and yeast infections in both ears. His ears are sensitive - to say the least, but Del is an incredibly gentle and accepting boy. He tolerates daily flushing and medication, takes his antibiotic like a champ and is very well mannered.
Del met all our dogs with a grace and patient charm that I have never seen before when bringing in a new foster dog. He got a bath and multiple brushings within a few hours of arrival and did just great. He must have been a loved pet at some point in his prior life, because he is a typical love sponge - will nudge an elbow or hand for a pet - knows to "go lay down" while we are eating, knows to go to the door to go outside to potty, no accidents at all in the house and we're on day #8 today. He sleeps quietly on a dog bed in our bedroom at night with our dogs, eats with our dogs - and shows no food or toy issues whatsoever. He walks pretty good on a leash, seems to know that he is to keep pace - not ahead or behind. I haven't felt the need to use a Gentle Leader at all. He also rides beautifully in my mini-van.
During the day, while we are at work, Del and our dogs are babygated in our kitchen and breakfast room and he does great. He loves nylabones and toys - and will lay on his bed and squeak, squeak, squeak until we or one of our dogs take it away because we've had enough squeak! He has not chewed up anything (soft toys included). He makes silly growly sounds when he lays on his back and wiggles and scratches. He like to have his tummy and chest scratched - and it's very rewarding to see him happy and contented.
Del may not be a candidate for Most Beautiful Golden Mix of 2006 - but he has a very gentle and loving demeanor, and deserves to live the rest of his life well cared for and loved for who he is.
Del will be moving to Mankato, MN soon - to a loving foster home, closer to the wonderful medical facilities that RAGOM has a partnership with. Del will need to have his ears evaluated for treatment and possibly surgery to correct the damage. We will miss this quiet, loving boy - but he deserves every opportunity and with RAGOM's help, he will have it.
God's speed Delly Belly. Your Western SD foster home and family love you!

This guy went back to the vet and it was determined he had an ear infection, bacterial in nature. He continues on antibiotics for a few more days and the vet added ear drops. I continue to clean his ears a couple of times a week with the recommended cleaner. He is not crazy about this ear care, and often heads in the opposite direction when he sees me reach for the bottles, however always lets me do my thing. This guy has been shedding so much and was so bad the day we were at the vet. The vet tech offered to brush him while he was sedated and I could not believe the difference when I picked him up. He looked so beautiful. I definitely need better equipment !!! Delly spent a couple days in boarding and overall did ok. They said he was a bit reactive when some new dogs came in. This guy is so sweet, I love him to death. If you'd like to meet him, email placement@ragom.org.

Delly continues to steal my heart - he knows how to do it - he stands by you and looks at you with that beautiful face and look of adoration !! This past weekend he and the resident boy went to the farm and had a great time checking out the smells and sites. He travels so well and did ok with having to be kenneled at night. Delly's ears continue to have sensitivity, seems like some days are worse than others. He may fuss a bit when the ear cleaning supplies are brought out, however has always allowed me to do what needs to be done. There does not seem to be any sign of infection. The heat is a little hard on Delly, while the other dogs may want to be outside under a shade tree, he tends to want to go in fairly quickly. He does enjoy walking in the am or pm and he and the resident boy do well together. On occasion he reacts to small critters or dogs while out walking, but is easily redirected.

Delancy continues to be the best house guest. Easy to please and tries to please. He has developed a not so good behavior, in that he teases the Bailey Girl (05-187). He only does this when she is in her kennel; he stands in front of the door and barks and barks, this gets her going and then he stops and watches. He will not always stop on command, however when I take a couple steps towards him he will generally retreat and head for his space. Delly loves to walk and we do so every morning. Del... Delly had his appointment at the U of M for his ears. The vet said they looked very good, however did some additional testing to get a more thorough picture of what the internal ear looked like. This testing was done with dermatology. Ultimately she did not offer a firm recommendation for surgery. Said she has only seen him in this "window" of time and as we don't know his history, information is lacking. Said it is very apparent he has had numerous ear infections, the information lacking is if he received adequate care and the infections continued or was his care poor and they never cleared or cleared well. Further said preventative care may greatly improve his situation and/or may need surgery in the future. She recommended continuing the medicated ear wash twice a week, if the infection returned in a month it was highly likely he may need surgery. Delly's ears continue to be sensitive and she anticipates they always will be; thus one needs to be mindful when petting near the ears. He did some lip curling when she was examining him. She recommended he not live with small children who may not understand this.
Since the appointment I have treated him twice a week and he seems to be maintaining. His hair has grown a lot and I will be trimming it a bit as it is much easier to treat and to see into the ear. While the ear cleaning appears uncomfortable, Delly manages it well - one ear is clearly more sensitive than the other.

Delancy is a WONDERFUL boy; he is so sweet, so gentle, well mannered and overall has a personality that could be described as "laid back". He LOVES to give and get some lovin'. He and the resident boy get along well and have spent time outside together; today was the first day they really played; it was hard to break it up but I had to get to work. Delly loves to go for walks - he does ok on the leash. Delly does so well with my six year old neighbor girl. She comes over almost every day and I think every day she says "Delly Belly really likes me". From my experiences while out walking, Delly is not terribly fond of small, high energy/vocal dogs.
Delly continues to have the treatments to his ears, he cooperates very well. His ears have cleared a lot however one continues to have some discharge and it is evident when you work with him that it is sensitive. It has taken some time to get it scheduled but we finally have an appt. at the U of M for an evaluation of his ears. The appt is on May 24.
I often take Delly with me when I am doing errands and have brought him into work on the weekend. He is so calm and just wanders around and eventually settles down and naps at my feet. Having him in my home is such a pleasure and a very different experience for me, as I am more accustomed to higher energy and needs. Since the day I brought him home I have thought he has the potential to be a therapy dog.
If you are looking for a quiet (I have never heard him bark!) well mannered, and super sweet boy, Delly may be the one for you. Please email placement@ragom.org for an opportunity to meet this fabulous guy.
