RAGOM

Ruby

Profile

Ruby came into RAGOM as an owner surrender. She may live with children ages 15 and above. She needs to be an only dog and has not been tested with cats, but she does have a high prey drive. While she does not require a physical fence, Ruby has leash aggression toward other dogs. She also has severe separation anxiety so she will need a family committed to managing her ongoing care. Ruby is a sweet, loyal companion who can't wait to meet her forever family.

Given her age and history, we still find it best that she live in a quiet home as an only dog. She just loves her people so much, she can't bear to share them. She'd be perfect for someone looking for an adventure buddy! She is slowly beginning to learn how to trust other dogs. She's highly food motivated and responds great to clicker training.

During her trip to Goldzilla, she got to the point where she was just 2 feet away from another dog. This is HUGE for Ruby! We are so proud of the continued progress she shows.

It's been a few days since she's had Trazadone. Given she's made progress without it, we still find it a great tool to help her with separation from her favorite people.

With continued time, trust and patience into her senior years, we know she is bound to find the right family. If you think that's you and you think you are up to the task, feel free to schedule a visit with her to see if the sparks fly. She'll be the flint to your steel!

  2. Ruby has shown good progress with her current foster family over the past few weeks. She continues to love being with her people and soaks up all pets. She is smart and knows exactly when her people are preparing to leave the home. Trazadone has been a useful tool in helping Ruby stay calm when separated from her people. She has been successfully left alone for up to four hours at a time. Ruby recently had a successful trip to the groomer when she was the only dog being groomed. Ruby has also ma...

Ruby has also made progress walking on a leash but she will still pull and bark when she sees other dogs as well as people on bikes or scooters. Walking routes are strategically planned to avoid these encounters. When Ruby is allowed to get close to people on her daily walks, she is loving and it is clear that she just wants pets.

Ruby is not able to tolerate interactions with other dogs at this time. She has had two attempted introductions and she barks, growls and shakes in fear after the experience. We are working with a one-to-one trainer to better understand how to help Ruby with this fear. In addition, Ruby has twice growled at teenage children in the home for unknown reasons.

We are not actively seeking applications for Ruby until we have a better understanding of Ruby's needs and can identify the strategies that will best support her.

  3. Ruby has settled into foster care beautifully and continues to show what a loving, devoted companion she can be. At seven years old, this sweet Golden mix has so much love to give and is ready to find the forever family she's been waiting for. Ruby is happiest when she's with her people. Whether she's following her foster around the house or curling up for a good night's sleep, she simply wants to be part of the family.

She's an excellent passenger in the car, sleeps soundly through the night, and is fully house-trained.

One of Ruby's sweetest qualities is how deeply she loves people. After spending her entire life with one family, she's incredibly loyal and forms strong bonds with those she trusts. She spent the last two years living primarily in a garage due to changes in her family's circumstances, so having a safe, loving home where she can truly belong means everything to her.

Ruby is learning how to walk on a leash. However, when out walking, Ruby becomes reactive toward other dogs and small animals like rabbits and squirrels. She has a strong prey drive and will bark, jump, and pull on the leash.

When her people leave the home, she becomes worried and will pace and bark because she misses them. However, she is never destructive. Trazodone has been a useful tool to help manage her separation anxiety.

Ruby is looking for a home where she can thrive. She will do best as the only pet and would do well living in a quieter neighborhood. Ruby is surprisingly athletic and can jump over gates and fences so she will need a plan to keep her safe when outside the home.

The family who welcomes Ruby home will be rewarded with an incredibly affectionate, loyal companion who wants nothing more than to love and be loved. She's resilient, gentle with people, and ready to blossom with someone who understands her needs. If you're looking for a faithful best friend who will happily be your shadow, Ruby may be the perfect match.
