Charlotte

Profile

09/22/2013:

Meet Charlotte, an 11-month-old Yellow Labrador Retriever (DOB 10/4/12). She is a high-energy, big puppy that is on her way to being a well-rounded dog. Charlotte is house trained and is learning to walk on a leash and listen using a Gentle Leader. She knows or is in the process of learning many commands. She came to us with a whole list she has been working on, and since we have had her, we are working on reinforcing some of the more important ones. Charlotte is somewhat of a diva and needs to learn what is OK to play with and what is off-limits, just like any other puppy.

Like I said, she is high-energy and will need a forever home that is willing to make sure she gets plenty of exercise, and consistent training. She is very smart and I would bet she would make an excellent agility or flyball dog. Charlotte loves soccer balls, tennis balls and anything else she can get in her mouth.

Charlotte came to RAGOM because she was too high-energy for the other senior dog in the household who is also starting to fail in her health. She was well loved and it was a very difficult decision to give her up. But they knew RAGOM would find a great family that will love her just as much.

Requirements for Charlotte's forever home.

  • Physical fence.
  • Consistent training.
  • Regular exercise. Long walks, playing soccer, or fetching tennis balls.
  • OK for children over 10. Charlotte still jumps as a greeting. We are working on this.
  • She would do best if she is not left for 8-10 hours at a time.

We are crate training Charlotte when we are out of the house for any length of time. And she sleeps in our room either on our bed or on her dog bed next to ours. When we turn off the lights, she settles right down and sleeps through the night. She gets along fine with our 2 resident dogs and 1 other foster dog, Lucky 13-192. The youngest of the other dogs is 8, so she has more energy the the rest of them combined.

  2. Charlotte had a chance to play with a 2-year-old pumpkin-dressed toddler on Halloween and had a blast. She was very gentle and patient dropping the ball and waiting for it to be thrown for her again. No issues with jumping or guarding. Seemed to recognize the limited size of her thrower. She has now been exposed to newborns through adults, and has no issues with aggressiveness and no issues with guarding, even with new favorite fresh bones. She has also had her first bath.....not too exited about that experience, but is now soft as can be. Also has had her nails trimmed again, which will continue to be a job for more than one person to assist until she becomes more used to having her feet held. I don't think she enjoyed her spa afternoon, but shook it right off and went off to play.

She continues to enjoy playing as much as possible, and weekend are her favorite as there is much fall work to be done and she can be out all day long.

Snow is forcast this week for the area and I am sure she will have a blast with that experience as well.

  3. Just got done with a romp with the neighbor's 2-year-old Golden male. It was like playing with my big brother. Definitely no issues playing with other dogs have been observed. Read more → Read less ↑

  4. Charlotte has settled into the routine. She kennels faster than resident dogs, knowing a treat is the reward. She has now kenneled for 7 hours without issue. She has also decided sleeping with kids in the house means more room at night than stuck trying to share a bed with two adults. Socks are no longer as much fun as they once were. Tennis balls remain the perennial favorite. Read more → Read less ↑

  5. Charlotte has had a busy few days. She traveled by car to a seasonal campground to close for the season, and once there, she was as if we had taken her to Disney. She did charge out of the camper once, but did recall to Foster Dad without difficulty. She slept in back of the car with a few reminders to stay back there. She has also now had a new experience with a young baby. She was very curious about the cooing and crying and the different smells. No aggression, just smelling and gentle curiosity. She has now mastered kenneling for 5 hours without issues or complaining. Continuing to make excellent progress.

She will give human items now in trade for a piece of cheese without destroying them, although that doesn't work for the favorite tennis balls. We continue to work on recall; she is responding more to her name and a whistle than her name and "come," but we continue to reinforce the command. She also has the excellent skill of walking behind people on the stairs and not charging down first. Definitely one smart lady.

  6. Charlotte transitioned to a new foster home this week due to her high energy. She has the energy of a 3-4 month old toddler Golden and is unsure how to focus that energy appropriately at times. She is frequently looking for others to play with or entertain her. She is walking very well on leash and good with sitting before coming in and out of the deck door. She does not beg for people food. We continue to work on recall, all done and give. She does like to steal objects with human scent when... Read more → Read less ↑

She is frequently looking for others to play with or entertain her. She is walking very well on leash and good with sitting before coming in and out of the deck door. She does not beg for people food. We continue to work on recall, all done and give. She does like to steal objects with human scent when she is bored and then try to keep away. She is excellent at retrieving and does "point" for objects. Her favorite, besides ball playing, is running water. Hoses, direct from water faucet, even likes to stick her head in the shower to try for water. She is fully vetted with no health issues found. She is crated approximately 3-4 hours per day for mandatory quiet time and does fairly well with minimal barking complaints. We will continue practicing this skill. She is unwilling to crate at night and does sleep on her foster's bed with no issues. She has been exposed to children as young as 7 without problems. She does have an affinity to children's toys and need to be out of sight. She has not been exposed to cats and is very aggressive toward her foster's chinchilla and could have potential issues with small animals. She enjoys playing with younger Goldens. She would thrive in a home with other younger animals as playmates, but would be happy as well in a home as the sole resident. (Would need extra play time)
