Sweet Betty crossed the Rainbow bridge today. She had been eating less and less food and was getting weaker. Yesterday she vomited a few times, so was obviously nauseated. She had also been having diarrhea lately. There were times when she seemed totally repulsed by food. Something was up with her digestive system. I was concerned that she would get too weak to go outside or get into the car. I don't think she was in pain. She slept 90% of the time. The cold was hard on her as she moved so very...

Betty has been wearing a helper harness for several weeks now. When she needs assistance getting up it makes it much easier for me to help her. Her appetite continues to be a challenge and I have to tempt her with special things to get her to eat. Lately, I have been soaking her kibble to soften it and putting a couple of really smelly dog treats on top. This has been working pretty well. When Betty first came to my home I wasn’t certain that she would make it to 2024 but she keeps on goin...

Betty is enjoying my full spectrum light. The cooler weather is affecting her and she is slowing down a lot. When she goes outside she spends time just staring in the distance and thinks for a while before climbing the two steps to the back door. She is eating well as long as she gets her special recipe: a wet food patty with kibble on top covered in puréed baby food chicken or turkey. She is not interested in eating if I don’t add the baby food. She licks it like whipped cream!

Betty’s appetite has improved so that she is now eating more kibble and doesn’t need to be bribed as much with baby food. She has a strange preference to eat her food off the floor rather than from a bowl. We compromise by using a plate for her food. She often pushes it from the plate to the floor anyway.  Betty using Abby as a chin rest. Betty is all about conserving energy.   She was the first one to use a new dog bed.

Betty is bandage free for the first time in a long time. Her leg wounds have healed. She has a new wound on her back left foot but that is being left uncovered and treated with antibiotic cream.  Betty’s skin is very thin and fragile so it is easily injured. A few nights ago she had diarrhea and slipped. When I woke in the morning she had not been able to get up but had rubbed a new raw spot on her foot. She never makes a sound so I had no idea that she couldn’t get up until I f...

Great news for Betty from the vet! Her leg sore has healed! The skin is very thin and fragile so it is still protected with a bandage. I am so relieved by this progress. Her appetite is still diminished, although she may just have noticed that the more reluctant she is to eat, the tastier the food gets.  Well done Betty for getting that wound healed!

Betty had a good time at Goldzilla. She sniffed many, many smells and collected many, many, many pats! She walked up to any group and expected petting from everyone. She thought that the whole day was about her! (It was!) I got her a pup cup from Barkuterie Box and you can see from the photo that she enjoyed it! The other photo is of her this morning after she had been for a bit of a roll in my tall ornamental grasses. She was definitely damp. She has been off of antibiotics since Friday and we...

etty has had a medical complication since my last update. She developed an infected wound on the same leg that had the infected toe. We don't know what has caused the wound. She leads such a quiet life that there is little chance for an injury. It is mysterious.  The vet cleaned and bandaged the wound and prescribed two antibiotics. Unfortunately, those antibiotics upset her stomach and her appetite disappeared. She is now on a different antibiotic and Prilosec to help her stomach cope wit...

Sweet Betty is doing very well. Right at this moment she wants me to stop typing and pet her. She will spend a long time next to me when I am sitting down. She just wants continuous pets. She will also rest her head on my feet to get attention. As you can see in the photo I was icing my foot and she thought that made a great chin rest. Her health has not changed since my last update, so that is good. Her appetite is good and I think that she would say that her life is good as well.  I am t...

Betty has gotten great results at the vet. The test on the tissue removed during her surgery was negative for any cancer. Her blood work shows that her thyroid level is now normal with the medication. Finally, her stitches came out today as her incision is healing well. A few more days of wearing a bandage and she will be done with it.  As always she has been great and sweet through all her medical issues. Her fur is starting to grow back in, so we will eventually see Betty in all of her go...

Betty had a big day yesterday. She had surgery for the foot wound that hasn't healed. No foreign body was found in the wound, but one of the bones in her toe was disintegrating. This caused the surgeon to amputate the toe as the bone could have caused future problems in that state. Betty did well during surgery and is sporting a lovely green bandage. She will go back to the vet weekly for a recheck and to have the bandage changed.  Betty is a real trooper. She takes everything in stride. S...

Betty was at a Meet and Greet at Scheels last weekend. She got lots of attention and many treats. (She thinks there should have been more treats.) She was very well behaved even with all of the new sights and sounds. It was a bit of a hike to get the to RAGOM table, but Betty is never in a hurry. Here is a photo of Betty at the event. On the medical front, Betty's foot wound is still not healed. We have stopped the antibiotics. Betty is not in any distress from the wound as I don't think that s...

As you can see from the photo Betty likes to go outside and have a good roll to get some good scratching done. She is doing well except for her foot wound which is still closed. Happily, she has not been trying to lick her foot so we have retired the cone. Everyone is glad to say good bye to the bulldozer! Betty has a funny habit. I give her pills in a bit of peanut butter. When she gets the peanut butter on her tongue she licks the cabinets under my sink. This puts peanut butter on the cabinet...

We have a clearer picture of Betty's health situation after receiving results of her tests. She has kidney disease and is hypothyroid. We started a thyroid medication today which should help that condition. We will be checking her blood in about 3 weeks to see how that medication is working.  Once her thyroid condition is regulated, we will address her kidney disease. Another medication may be added at that time. Kidney disease can increase blood pressure, but so can hypothyroidism. Her blo...

Betty is doing well and has fit right into our slow senior routine. When we walk in the morning she has figured out that my human walking companions bring treats. She is very happy to get to the front of the line for her share, but is never aggressive with the other dogs. Her vision isn't too good, so you have to watch out for your fingers. Her sense of smell is excellent and she frequently is on the trail of some enticing scent.  She mostly likes to sleep on the floor, but this week she t...

Sweet Betty has been with me for a week. Prior to that she was in a temporary foster home for two weeks. Betty is approximately 13 years old and was found as a stray before being brought to a shelter where she spent a week. She was very thin and covered in burrs when she was found. I am so grateful that she is in my care now. Betty is a very calm and quiet dog. She is not interested in other dogs but follows me everywhere. She likes human attention, but she also has figured out that all food co...
