This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Dakota has been with us for a week. Dakota is a purebred, 6-month-old Golden who is an incredible beauty, inside and out. Her coat is so soft and such a gorgeous color. As I write this, she is playing with our resident dog, Cooper (a.k.a. Romeo 13-157). They have been playing non-stop for the last five hours!

Dakota visited the vet on March 12, and she is up-to-date on vaccinations, is microchipped, had a negative fecal test, and weighed 45 lbs. Her spay is scheduled for March 30.

Dakota was a bit anxious the first few days, but settled in so nicely after day three. Initially, the house training wasn't going very well, but it only took Dakota a few days to be accident-free. Such a smart girl!

Dakota is a very sweet, gentle girl with a truly Golden personality. She loves her people and follows them wherever they go, insists on lots of snuggles, really enjoys other playful dogs, and keeps her distance from dogs who aren't terribly enamored with her presence. Although she would benefit from an obedience class, she is surprisingly well-mannered for a 6-month-old puppy. Currently, we are working with Dakota to stop jumping on people when greeting them, especially friendly strangers. She came from a home with two small children.

Dakota travels so well. She has been perfect on two long car rides. She easily goes in her kennel for the ride with a few treat enticements. We tried the kennel the first two nights Dakota was in our home for bedtime, but decided a super comfy dog bed in the tiled laundry room would be a better option for her. She has done great with no complaints or accidents. Once she is completely house trained, she would do well with free roam at night, since she easily settles in for bedtime. Dakota also does well when left for four or five hours with the resident dog, but may decide to chew a laundry basket or two if you've been having too much fun without her!

Dakota will need a great deal of exercise and play to keep her happy. She enjoys walks and really thinks she is hot stuff as she retrieves every single item she sees. On walks this week, I've been the lucky recipient of the following Dakota retrievals: 12 sticks, 4 pop cans, 3 newspaper ads, 5 plastic bottles, a yogurt container, a Burger King bag, a football, a dog leash, a sock, boots, a dead fish, and a scarf. I know you are all a bit jealous!

Dakota Fun Facts:

  • House training...now goes to the front door to indicate she needs to go to the bathroom
  • Great with other dogs and enjoys playing
  • Knows some commands: "sit" and "shake"
  • Loves walks and retrieving everything!
  • Previous home had two small children

Dakota is a wonderful, loving, energetic girl who will be a remarkable dog and companion. We love her already, and you will, too! If you are interested in meeting Dakota, please contact your Placement Advisor.
