Profile

Duke is a 3 year old purebred golden with beautiful amber eyes and a very soft coat. He came to us in early December from a shelter in South Dakota.

This boy is all about love and pets, and is a definite velcro dog. It seems like he may have been more of a guy’s dog in the past, but he quickly became a momma’s boy in our house. He follows me everywhere! He also likes to nap on my feet so he knows when I get up.

He is a very happy dog and he always seems to find a way to have fun. He had to wear a cone while he was recovering from his neuter surgery, and he learned he could use the cone to scoop up snow outside and bring it inside to snack on. Our obedience instructor says he’s “the happiest golden retriever in the world” and I definitely agree. He has this big goofy grin, and is always happy to see you.

He has lots of energy and is very playful. He likes to play fetch, but we are still working on that whole “give it back” thing. Duke thinks it’s much more fun to chew on the ball instead. When he’s inside he amuses himself by chasing his tail.

He loves, loves, loves getting pets, especially belly rubs. He will give “the look” or the golden nudge if he hasn’t had enough pets, which is pretty much all the time. I’m pretty sure this boy would be very happy to have his belly rubbed for 8 hours straight!

He is a very smart dog and has a strong will to please. In the short time we have had him, he’s learned to sit and wait patiently for his meals and to go outside, sit and stay until I come back into the room, and “leave it” with the cat. We just started obedience classes, and he was a star pupil once he got over the initial excitement from the other dogs. I am hopeful that someday he may make an excellent therapy dog, since he loves people so much.

It took less than a month for us to fall in love with Duke and to feel like he was “our dog”. We feel so lucky to provide a forever home for this wonderful boy and we are looking forward to giving him all the love that he deserves.
