6/15/05: Duke is a purebred, 6 year old, neutered Golden we picked up from a family last night who loved him enough to want him to have a better life. They got him as a puppy and loved him very much, but simply did not feel they had enough time for him. Because he has been well taken care of, he is an exceptional dog. He met our resident Golden girl with no problem at all and, even though he had never seen one before, he met the cat in perfect gentlemanly fashion.

Duke is a big boy, weighing in at about 100 lbs. He is not overweight, just a tall boy. I would not have guessed that by just looking at him. Luckily, he's very manageable. He is obedient (sit, stay, lay down, release, etc.), comes when he's called, does not jump on people, does not counter surf, walks like a champ on the leash (no Gentle Leader needed!), completely housebroken. Whew, what else can I say? He's just a good boy! According to his former family he had run of the house all day and during the night and has never been destructive at all. I did kennel him last night and for awhile today and he went right in when I said "kennel up". Never heard a peep out of him.

Like so many Goldens, he does have some seasonal allergies and is currently taking an oral steroid for that, but according to his vet records and his former owners, his is fine most of the time. He visited the vet today and is current on all shots, micro-chipped, heartworm negative, and in great shape. His former family also had him shaved for the summer. Judging from his tail and ears, however (which did not get trimmed), he looks like he will have a gorgeous coat when his hair grows back!

I can't think of any kind of family that wouldn't work for Duke. His former family had 2 boys who Duke grew up with, and he's met our neighbor girls (ages 5 and 7) and was extremely mannerly. He also loves to swim and will retrieve sticks from the water for you all day if you want.
