Profile

Meet Miss Ginger Snap, yes that is what it says on her paperwork. Her owner had to move out of state and his mother wanted to keep Ginger, but she found herself needing to bring her 91 year old mother in to live with her.  While Ginger is great in the house, the S/O was concerned Ginger could accidently trip up her mother.  A very difficult decision to let this girl move onto a permanent home.

I met Ginger at 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Not being a morning person, the day had not seen sunshine yet and it was raining, I was nervous about a 2 1/2 hour drive with Ginger and another dog I was bringing back to St Cloud for another rescue. Well, silly me, what did I know. The S/O said her goodbyes, told Ginger to get in the doggie mobile, told her to lay down, Ginger did as she was told and never moved. She loves loves loves going for rides.

She met all 3 males ( Jake resident GR, Max 08-136 and Holliday 7 y/o English Setter foster) with no incidents, same with the 3 cats. I had been told she can and has jumped their 4' cyclone fence when bored, so figured I'd best stay close in my little 3' high fenced yard. Later in the day I took her out on the open yard and she met Laker, the 2 year old lab from next door. Well, with a long yellow rope trailing her and no prompting she was running circle 8's with Lake and Holliday. WOW, can this girl run. Her recall is amazing and came everytime when called.

This is what I know about Miss Ginger Snap:

  • 7 years old (well she be officially 7 on Tuesday Oct. 28th.......frosty paw time!!! )
  • 54 pounds, needs to gain some weight
  • Negative for heartworm and lyme ( the 'sample' results will be in Monday)  Her heart and lungs are in great shape. She is up to date on her shots and may require a tooth to be removed. .
  • She basically had free run at her home on the lake.  Loves the water and would walk/swim around the lake on her own.
  • Lived with cats
  • Has great house manners
  • Takes treats very nicely, can put  your hand in her food
  • Doesn't seek out or seem to need the company of other dogs; always been an only 'child', but enjoys the outdoor play time with the other dogs.
  • I don't feel a dog needing a role model or a puppy would be the best fit.  Puppies want to jump, nip and play and I don't  think this is what Ginger is looking for.
  • She would be happy as an only 'child', or with a dog that wouldn't be bugging her, but would run with her, kids would be great.
  • Will get snarky when she has a chew bone; or a toy - she had a pull toy and Max tried to play tug with her, aah she let him know that wasn't going to happen
  • She loves to find sticks, bring 'em to you and play fetch
  • She loves her cloth frisbee and is so adorable and funny with it.  When you throw it, if she catches it she brings it right back to you.  If she doesn't catch it, she grabs it off the ground, then proceeds to chew and shake it up.....Bad Frisbee......then brings it back to you.  Just hilarious.
  • She doesn't counter surf, get into garbage, protect her food or toys from us humans and will give up whatever she has.
  • She is not a jumper and does not get up on the furniture or bed
  • She can get a bit excited when out playing and will 'nip' a bit at your hands/coat type thing, but not an issue.
  • She has been around grandchildren (not mine:( from baby age on up and is wonderful with them
  • She is house trained.
  • She is allergeric to wheat and so eats wheat free food and treats.
  • The fencing issue is an unknown per se as I don't allow her out in my yard without me there.  But knowing she can jump about a 4 1/2 foot fence is something anyone adopting her will need to know.
  • Does she need a fence?  Her recall is excellant, so as long as her family was with her I think she would be fine.
  • She is well trained, not demanding, likes to be in the room you are in, but content to just hang.
  • She will bark to let you know she has to go out, when some else barks or if someone comes to the door.
  • She was left gated in the kitchen with Jake for over 2 hours and no accidents or incidents:)

Ginger went on a home visit with me and Max on Saturday and while outside playing frisbeeshe was fine. Once in the house she paced and whinned a lot. When taken outside she wanted to get in the van.  o go to my place? Home? or to get her frisbee.  At my house she has been great and no whinning and pacing. She has melded with the pack without incident. She can have her chewy but I just need to keep Holliday away from her. She doesn't understand the interaction of playing indoors with another dog, or the whole share toys or bones thing. But I wouldn't be surprised to see her learn down the line. She sleeps on a doggie bed next to my side of the bed.

This dog has walked in and fit in like she has been here forever. She  learned quickly where she was to eat, where to go to go out, checked out the cats and sniffed them and has let them do their own thing. She is a gem and at 7 years is young enough to be playful, but old enough to not have all that puppy 'stuff' going on. She is a wonderful lady.

Miss Ginger is ready to look applicants at anytime, so feel free to contact [email protected]
