Lexi came to us two weeks ago as part of the group of dogs rescued from the North Dakota puppy mill. At only 1 1/2 years old, this sweet little girl had already been a mom at least once (her babies are Toni and Maddie) but those days will soon be behind her and she will get to enjoy a true golden life. We are fortunate that Lexi came to us relatively healthy, at least compared to the little puppies still fighting for their lives. She was very underweight, had a double ear infection, and a pretty nasty skin infection , but is getting healthier every day! If things look good at her vet check this week, we will schedule her for her spay and she will be ready to move into her forever home.
Now onto the most important thing - Lexi's personality. She is an absolute sweetheart, loves to play (she is a hoarder of toys and always needs something in her mouth), and loves to be close to her people. She does exhibit many of the typical mill characteristics - skittish around strangers, scared of loud/unknown noises, and doesn't like a front approach - but once she warms up to you, she is a total lovebug. While she doesn't play much with us, she loves to play with our two residents. Outside, she tries endlessly to engage them (and sometimes they respond), but when they don't feel like playing, she is perfectly happy entertaining herself. She runs a happy dance around the backyard, finds anything and everything buried in the backyard - toys, sticks, leaves, ice chunks - and prances around with her prize, and makes endless snow angels. She is just such an incredibly happy dog - which is so amazing considering where she came from. Her recall is pretty good, unless she has found some especially fun item outside which she is not ready to leave yet, and we have begun working on some basic commands - she learned sit in one day! She is going to make some family very lucky!
A few things I would like to see in her forever home: a fenced yard, older kids, and at least one other dog for her to play with. She will also need a family that is very patient and willing to work with her - she will not warm up immediately (although she did much quicker with us than some of our other fosters who came from puppy mills and backyard breeders). This little girl is a gem and I am sure she will find her forever home soon.
