Profile

Maryland has become a real snuggle bug.  She loves to come up to you and get hugs and give big kisses!  Maryland just needs to spend some time getting used to outside noises and changes in her environment and to put on some weight.  She was only 43lbs at the vet, so she needs to gain a good ten pounds.  Maryland will need a forever family who wants a big love bug and is willing to be patient and continue to work on some of her fears.

It is with a heavy heart, and moist eyes, that I report the recent passing of our beloved JoJo.She came to us with the name Maryland, shortly after the 9-11 tragedy. She lived the first year of her life at a puppy mill/backyard breeder, in Brainerd. We believe this environment was really hard on her – not only because she was fed hard-kernel corn from a pig trough, but also because she was bullied by the owners and other dogs. We were told that her former owner surrendered to RAGO...

12/21/01: Well, after six weeks of watching this beautiful, scared and skinny little girl overcome her fears and start acting like a GReat pupper, it was time to send her off to her forever home! Maryland or Marilyn or Mo-Mo-lynn as we came to call her, met with her future family this past Tuesday. She loved them and they her. She sat by them the entire time they were here and soaked up all of the love and attention they gave her. She seemed to say that they were the ones for her! They see...

12/8/01:  Maryland discovered that she likes tennis balls this week, and what a discovery for her!  When she first came here she was afraid of them.  She would go in the opposite direction of the way they were thrown or rolled and kind of duck down.  Earlier this week she picked one up and just kind of carried it around for a while.  When she dropped it and it rolled away from her she just sort of looked at it.  Then she did it again and WOW the game was on.  I...

11/17/01:  We went to the vet this week.  While she was a little shy, she did just fine and was a very good girl.  She had her shots and HW test (neg).  She did do a little belly crawl when they brought her back for her blood draw for the HW, but I've seen us humans do the same thing when it comes to needles.  Things that were scary to her when she came here, such as doors, are no longer scary to her.  She even nudged open the bathroom door when the hair dryer was o...

11/25/01:  Maryland has been such a joy to have around the house.  This week she not only seemed to shed her fears of house living, she has decided that being a house dog is definitely what she wants to be.  She's figured out that the food just keeps coming a couple of times a day and that treats are almost unlimited.  She no longer eats as if someone else will get it if she doesn't eat fast and furiously.  (I will miss those great big burps she had after eating like tha...

11/11/01:  Maryland arrived late Friday afternoon.  This little girl was nervous about all of the new things that she was encountering.  Doors, stairs, vinyl flooring and narrow spaces, just to name a few.  Within just a few hours though she had conquered the vinyl flooring in the kitchen!  Twenty four hours after her arrival, she has started to explore on her own, follows us around, and gives kisses.  She's such a sweetheart and loves to rest her paw or chin o...
