Profile

Meet Odin! This sweet boy was surrendered due to a change in his family’s housing situation and is a total family dog! Odin is one of the sweetest, most easy going boys I’ve ever met. He is content to take a nice long walk, and then come in and lie on the couch for the rest of the day! This is probably why he seems to be a little overweight, so his forever family will need to do their best to keep him active. Another reason he might not be so active is that he has some sort of issue with one of his back legs that causes him to limp a little if he plays too hard or walks too long. It also means he requires a boost to get in the back of our SUV, and it takes a little convincing to get him to jump out. His original owners said he had this when they got him, and they aren’t really sure what the issue is. We should know more about this, (and about exactly how much he weighs) after he has his vet visit this Saturday.

Odin has a very gentle and calm personality for such a young (and large) dog. His surrendering family did not take him through any obedience training, but he does seem to know some basic commands like “sit,” “kennel,” and “go to bed.” He also has very good recall as long as he’s not busy with anything TOO interesting. We have a fenced yard, and he does fine out there. I do go out with him now in case he gets any funny ideas, but he seems to respect the boundary without a second thought. He does jump up every once in a while when he gets really excited, but with some training I think this would be easily corrected. He walks on a leash like a dream with a Gentle Leader. He does pull a little without it, but nothing too terrible considering his size. He prefers to hang out at your side on a walk anyway so he can bump your hand for a pet every once in a while!

We haven’t seen any real bad behavior from Odin. I did catch him counter surfing one night, but he knew he shouldn’t be, and got down when I came into the kitchen. He does grumble a bit when he sees someone walk by outside, and will bark a couple times if someone comes to the door, but he quiets down right away if you tell him to. His surrendering family said he has chewed electrical cords in the past when bored, but he has yet to chew anything inappropriate at our house. We did make sure to keep the cords up in the bedroom while we sleep though, in case he decided to go for it.

He was not kenneled at his last home, but doesn’t seem to mind it. He will go right in with the offer of a treat, and just curls up and lies down once the door is latched. It’s not his favorite place, so it would be good if he could go to a home where his people are with him at least most of the day. He was kenneled while we were at work yesterday, and he greeted us like he hadn’t seen another living creature in twelve years. We have left him out at night to sleep, and he sleeps on his dog bed on the floor next to our bed all night, no problem. He did wake me up to go out early Sunday morning, but came right back in and went back to bed for another hour without a fuss.

In his former home, there were both young children and another small dog. We haven’t tested him with kids yet, but because he is so huge, he could knock young children over. I think he could easily be trained NOT to, but this would have to be a consideration for his forever family. He just has so much love to give, and babies are right at the perfect licking and snuggling height! I think he would do well either with or without another dog. He seems to be more concerned with getting attention from his people, but does enjoy playing with his Foster Sister a bit. He was a bit of a Velcro dog for the first few days, but has gotten a little more comfortable at our house, and he will go off on his own sometimes and I will find him snoozing on the kitchen floor. Most of the time, though, he is happiest if he can see and hear his people. He is a couch dog, he loves to snuggle up in the corner of the couch look out the window, or lie his head in your lap and take a nap. (Just his head, because he quickly found out that no more of him could fit in Foster Mom’s lap!)

More to come soon on this lover boy, stay tuned!
