This handsome fellow is Pete.  Pete came to our home last night from the Missouri puppy mill rescue.  He was the main stud dog there and was socialized pretty well.  He is 2 1/2 years old, of medium build (but has a large head and paws!).  He is 68 pounds with a long flowing coat.  He is a very calm, cautious young boy, and he is very sweet.  He met our resident dogs and it went very well.  Our dogs are both female, so he was very happy to see them.  He also saw both of our cats, he did growl, but then ignored them when they didn't pose a threat.  He likes our kids, he licks their hands and toes and allows them to pet him.  He doesn't seem to know steps, so that is a small hurdle that we will need to get over, but he seems to get better each time we try.  He also hasn't eaten much, he is not food motivated, so we will have to get creative with ways to get him to eat.  He did eat some ham and he took it out of my fingers way nicer than my two dogs.  He had a bath at intake last night, and then we gave him another one this morning.  He has this strong smell about him, it doesn't seem to be in his coat, so I'm wondering if he has an ear infection.  I cleaned out his ears, and he was very appreciative.  Once I must have hit a good spot with the Q-tip as his back leg did a little dance.  I will be bringing him in to the vet as soon as I can get in, and will also set up an appointment for him to be neutered.  We took him out to our back yard and gave him the brushing of his lifetime.  It looked like it snowed back there!!!  He enjoyed it very much and even rolled on to his back!  We spent some time out on our deck this afternoon, and he was scratching at our back screen door.  We didn't want him in without us, so we would gently tell him no.  Well, he didn't like that, so he pawed out the corner of the screen and let himself in!!  He now has his own homemade doggy door, which we will need to fix quickly so we don't lose our cats!  Over all, he is a very gentle and kind dog, no potty accidents as we are keeping a very close eye on him.  I'll post more as we get to know this big sweetie.
