Sam is an 8 year old male Golden Retriever. Sam is a formerly adopted RAGOM dog. He suffers from periodic Separation Anxiety. This is the reason he has been returned to RAGOM after 4 years with a loving family. SA is not a constant problem for Sam, and he has shown no symptoms when he is with other dogs. Sam respects baby gates - he doesn't like them but he does respect them. His current foster home is working extensively with him to help him recover from his terror of crates. Even with this, I would hesitate to ask him to remain in a crate for long periods of time. I would NOT hesitate to baby-gate him into a safe room that does not contain papers to shred. The shredding of papers is the main way in which he has manifested his Separation Anxiety in the past.
He was fine with his previous owners young grandchildren. Sam is great with other dogs. I believe that his 2001 foster home had cats that he was wonderful with. He is completely housetrained. He is currently being treated for Lymes Disease - he takes his daily pills very easily in cottage cheese, but doesn't like peanut butter. Sam has learned to stay off the furniture, except for his snuggle time in bed. Sam should only be placed in a home with other dogs, preferably with a fenced yard. The other dogs will help him to avoid SA in the future.
Sam's very favorite activities are playing with tennis balls - multiple tennis balls at the same time and chewing on rawhides. He enjoys playing with his foster sisters and he loves to be outside. Sam enjoys stuffed animals - he particularly enjoys un stuffing them and then destroying them! The remainder of stuffed animals have now been put away where he can't find them!
He has just of touch of stubbornness in him, as some Golden Retrievers have been known to. He has been with for almost a week and has been one of the easiest house guests I have had. His worst bad habit is counter surfing. With his long body, he has an amazing reach.
