Trick or Treat. That's what Tanner, a handsome, medium sized, blond hunk who happens to be a 5 year old purebred Golden, should be saying today. This guy probably thinks he came to my house for a Halloween party. Instead Tanner will soon be wondering if he has been tricked or is this a treat as he will be spending the holidays with me and my two labs. After next Monday, I have no doubt he will think he's been tricked and there is no treat good enough to make up for the this.
Here's his story. Tanner was found as a stray in a small town in Iowa. This town does not have any animal control, so Tanner caught a ride in a squad car with a wonderful police officer who brought him to a vet clinic that holds strays for 7 days. Lucky for Tanner, he was able to stay a bit longer before his time was up.... and he did not have to find out what it means when "your time is up". Even luckier RAGOM was contacted and Tanner was transported to a boarding facility in South Dakota. As is part of the routine medical care Tanner received as a RAGOM dog, blood tests that check for illness and parasites were done. Here's where life tricks sweet boy Tanner....his heart worm test came back positive. Yes, Tanner has heart worm. X-rays confirmed the diagnosis and Tanner was on a transport to Minneapolis the next day. Thanks to Kathy and Rona for the quick transport and medical care as well as all the other volunteers and supporters who make it possible for dogs like Tanner to receive the care he so urgently needs and deserves.
Tanner has an appointment on Monday morning for the first of three painful injections. If all goes well, he will come home with me on Monday night. He will have pain meds and will need to be kept very quiet, leashed or crated 24/7. He will need to be quiet for one month and will then receive two more injections, followed by another month of rest. More blood tests will be done after that and the rest of Tanner's care will be determined. He does need to be neutered, but it will have to wait until after his heart worm treatment is complete. Please keep this sweet boy in your thoughts and prayers. This is a painful treatment and is hard on the dogs, not without complications. His medical care will be expensive, so if anyone is thinking of sponsoring a dog or making a donation to RAGOM, please consider making it on behalf of sweet Tanner. Mr Tanner will not be available for adoption until he has completed his treatment. I will update his page often, and will let everyone know how his first treatment goes. Fingers and paws crossed for Tanner.
Here are a couple of photos from his first afternoon with his foster brother and sister....they all get along great. He's enjoying his freedom now as soon it will be leashed time only. A reminder from Tanner, please don't forget to "treat" your animals with their heart worm preventive....he sure wishes someone had given him his.
