Tovel is a Golden mix, weighing about 50 pounds. He came to RAGOM after being fostered for a few months by Love a Golden Rescue (LAGR) out of Missouri and arrived in the rainy north this past weekend. He was originally surrendered by his family due to allergies. Tovel is a sturdy but compact guy with tiny feet (he didn't get those from his Golden ancestors) and is surprisingly strong for his small stature. He is very agile and very quick. He has some lovely markings: black in his ears and tail and white chest and spotted paws (like an Australian Shepherd).

He is doing great in the house with the other dogs and was comfortably laying in the pack within an hour of his arrival. He seems to know his basic commands and is very responsive to instructions/corrections. He does come in from the yard when called, even when I can't see him on the other side of the garage. I suspect, though, that if he were chasing something interesting, he would be deaf to my voice.

Tovel does fine in his crate - have not seen him kennel on command yet - but it has only been a few days. When guided by his collar, he willingly enters the crate and hangs there without any fuss. His previous foster did report that he "got into some mischief" when he was not crated while the humans were away, so we highly recommend that he be crated or confined initially in his new home.

He hasn't "played" with the other dogs yet, and he has not shown any interest in the stuffed toys in the house, but hopefully (if it ever stops raining), we can see if he engages with outside balls or chasing games in the yard. He doesn't seem to mind the rain and did not react at all to the recent thunder.

Tovel is very curious and loves to look out the window and explore the house and yard. He is going to need an environment with some good mental stimulation, I think, in addition to good exercise (not just yard play time). He is calm (lays down and settles down quickly), but quick to jump up and is ready to go if he thinks something might happen . . .

He really likes to be touched and petted, and calmly rolls onto his back to present his pretty white belly for stroking. He was fine with getting brushed and waits patiently by the back door for me to dry off his fur and feet after he has been outside in the rain. I think Tovel would like to be a lap dog (or maybe he was with his prior family).

We will take a trip to the vet tomorrow for a wellness check and to get his nails trimmed, and will hopefully get some real walks in the next few days to learn about his leash etiquette.
